Who will you be working with?
The Locomotive NPI Controls team owns the control architecture and embedded software requirement specification for the engine and electric drivetrain control system integration and leads the design and implementation of the application control logic, diagnostics, and protections to maximize product performance, reliability, and ensure safety and regulatory compliance. You will set, communicate, and execute objectives for self and others, and be accountable for project deliverables aligned with business outcomes.
How will you make a difference?
The Locomotive NPI Control Applications Engineering Technical Leader will lead and direct control system enhancements and new feature development for Wabtec’s family of diesel electric, dual fuel, and hybrid diesel-battery locomotives, as well as marine and stationary engine systems. You will work to guide a dynamic team to define control strategy requirements and concepts, design and implement solutions, perform control system calibration and validation, and support issue resolution for both New Technology and New Product Introduction initiatives.

Required Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace Engineering.
- Strong professional experience in engineering design or research and development.
- Strong professional project experience in engine/powertrain systems, electrical systems/controls modeling, and/or control systems engineering.
- Strong technical aptitude and domain expertise, including applicable engineering tools and processes.
- Demonstrated technical project or program leadership capability.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills, oral and written.
- Experience with system- and subsystem-level requirement definition and validation testing.
- Experience with system modeling, analysis, and controls design concept definition.
- Skilled in developing, analyzing, and reviewing SIMULINK and Visio model diagrams.
Preferred Experience and Qualifications
- Master’s degree or PhD in Mechanical/Electrical/Aerospace Engineering.
- Proficient in control theory and/or control methods including system identification, logic and state machines, closed loop control systems, and discrete time control system implementation.
- Large experience with vehicle powertrain/drivetrain equipment, systems, control, and diagnostics.
- Large experience with electric vehicle/hybrid power applications, design, and testing.
- Detailed knowledge of internal combustion engines with respect to engine performance, combustion, emissions control, regulatory compliance
- Detailed knowledge of rotating electric machines, power electronics, propulsion battery technology.
- Experience with DOORS or similar requirements definition methods/tools and control model auto-coding for high bandwidth, closed-loop real-time control
- Experience leading or supporting idea creation and best practices sharing forums for innovation and strategic improvements
What will your typical day look like?
Essential responsibilities include:
- Defining engine and electric drivetrain control feature/diagnostics requirements and documentation in coordination with Locomotive Systems, Subsystems, and Hardware cross-functional design teams.
- Ensuring risk identification and mitigation at product or project level in line with business goals.
- Ensuring execution rigor through the engineering design and tollgate process.
- Proposing new control system concepts/enhancements to solve complex problems for new technology applications as part of new product introductions.
- Developing and enhancing engine and electric drivetrain system and component control plant models.
- Developing and reviewing MATLAB scripts and SIMULINK models for control logic implementation.
- Developing and reviewing feature test procedures to ensure performance meets requirements.
- Documenting and reviewing failure modes analysis (DFMEA) and system functional interactions.
- Supporting electronic control hardware and interface requirement definition and validation.
- Supporting feature calibration and validation efforts in the engine test cell, integrated hardware simulator testing, locomotive system testing, customer acceptance and field in-service monitoring.
- Supporting design and documentation updates for safety and regulatory compliance assurance.
- Supporting commercial requisition and reliability growth through product and platform expansion.
Key competencies include:
- Leading the execution of cross-functional technical projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product/program requirements.
- Engaging with senior engine, traction & auxiliary control engineers, systems and subsystem engineering, program management, commercial teams, simulation, software, and hardware teams in the application of advanced controls techniques/methods/tools to meet challenging requirements.
- Leading technical and program design and operations reviews as a presenter or reviewer.
- Providing timely communications to key stakeholders on progress, issues, or constraints which impact schedule, costs, scope of work, and/or resources.
- Providing technical guidance and mentorship to team members and engaging a broad range of product and technical experts to improve design, tools, and process capability.
- Reporting technical data and intellectual property generated by the assigned project consistent with engineering policies and procedures.
