Job Description
The Motion Sensing team at Apple develops groundbreaking MEMS and magnetics sensing technologies for various products. This role involves rigorous systems engineering analysis and robust systems architectures to ensure motion sensing hardware meets user needs. Key responsibilities include translating top-level requirements into guidance for integration teams and developing models to derive accurate sensor module requirements and guide system integration challenges across Apple's product portfolio. Must have:
- BS degree and 10+ years relevant industry experience
- Create and validate quantitative end-to-end models
- Translate customer experience into hardware metrics
- Analyze trade-offs and impact of changes
- Specify data collections for model validation
- Author engineering requirements specifications
- Present technical status and risks
- Work cross-functionally with development teams
Good to have:
- PhD and 5+ years experience in motion sensor development
- Experience in architecture, design, characterization, and validation
- Deep understanding of electrical/mechanical engineering and physics
- Good understanding of motion sensing technologies
- Fundamentals in signal processing, probability, and statistics
- Experience in modeling complex multi-physics systems
- Experience with modeling and analysis tools (Matlab, Python)

You will be a feature architect, responsible for proving that motion sensing hardware capabilities meet feature requirements. You will provide the quantitative link between hardware specifications and the end-user feature figures of merit. Core responsibilities include: Create and validate quantitative end-to-end models of sensors, systems, and algorithms; the models should capture the entire signal chain—physical, electrical, and algorithmic—to streamline algorithm prototyping and guarantee performance in high-volume production Identify and translate customer user experience into hardware level performance evaluation metrics Analyze trade-offs to provide guidance to module and system integration teams Perform impact analyses to assess proposed requirement & specification changes Determine the sensitivity of user-facing features to variation in sensor specifications Predict the impact of new technologies by performing design studies Specify data collections to validate models and collect representative user data Author high quality and thorough engineering requirements specifications Prepare and deliver presentations to clearly communicate technical status, risks and mitigation strategies for ongoing sensing system programs Work cross-functionally with algorithm and feature development teams
- BS and a minimum of 10 years relevant industry experience
- PhD and 5+ years of hands-on experience and proven track record in motion sensor (IMU, magnetometer, or pressure sensor) and/or sensing system development
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and solid teamwork and leadership skills
- Experience in architecture, design, characterization, and validation of motion sensor or sensing technology that includes theory of operation, signal processing, fabrication, packaging and design trade-offs
- Deep understanding of electrical or mechanical engineering, transducer physics, and system engineering
- Good understanding of motion sensing technologies, such as MEMS accelerometers, gyroscopes, pressure sensors, and magnetic sensing technology
- Good fundamentals in signal processing, probability, and statistics
- Experience in modeling, building, and testing complex multi-physics systems
- Experience in modeling, data collection, data analysis, and statistical analysis tools (ANSYS Maxwell, Comsol, Matlab, Python, JMP)
