Job Description

The Lead Engineer - Controls Engineering will join the Locomotive NPI Controls team, focusing on control architecture and embedded software requirements for engine, electric drivetrain, and vehicle control systems. This role involves designing and implementing application control logic, diagnostics, and protections to optimize product performance, reliability, and ensure safety. The engineer will support control system enhancements and new feature development for Wabtec’s diesel electric, dual fuel, and hybrid locomotives, as well as marine and stationary engine systems, contributing to New Technology and New Product Introduction initiatives.
Must have:
  • Professional project experience in engine/powertrain systems, electrical systems/controls modeling, and/or control systems engineering.
  • Proficiency with engineering tools and processes.
  • Demonstrated technical project or program execution capability.
  • Skilled in developing, analyzing, and reviewing SIMULINK and Visio model diagrams.
  • Developing and enhancing engine, electric drivetrain, and vehicle control system concepts.
  • Defining engine, electric drivetrain, and vehicle control feature/diagnostics requirements and documentation.
  • Prototyping new control applications concepts/enhancements through modeling and simulation.
  • Developing MATLAB scripts and SIMULINK models.
  • Performing and documenting failure modes analysis (DFMEA).
  • Supporting feature calibration and validation efforts.
  • Leading the execution of assigned projects.
Good to have:
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical/Electrical/Aerospace Engineering.
  • Proficient in control theory and/or control methods including system identification, logic and state machines, closed loop control systems, and discrete time control system implementation.
  • Strong experience with vehicle powertrain/drivetrain equipment, systems, control, and diagnostics.
  • Strong experience with electric vehicle/hybrid power applications, design, and testing.
  • Detailed knowledge of internal combustion engines with respect to engine performance, combustion, emissions control, regulatory compliance.
  • Detailed knowledge of rotating electric machines, power electronics, propulsion battery technology.
  • Experience with DOORS or similar requirements definition methods/tools.
  • Experience with control model auto-coding for high bandwidth, closed-loop real-time control.
  • Experience with planning and performing system-level validation testing.

Who will you be working with?

The Locomotive NPI Controls team owns the control architecture and embedded software requirement specification for the engine, electric drivetrain, and vehicle control system integration and leads the design and implementation of the application control logic, diagnostics, and protections to maximize product performance, reliability, and ensure safety and regulatory compliance. You will set, communicate, and execute objectives for self and others, and be accountable for project deliverables aligned with business outcomes.

How will you make a difference?

The Locomotive NPI Controls Engineer will support control system enhancements and new feature development for Wabtec’s family of diesel electric, dual fuel, and hybrid diesel-battery locomotives, as well as marine and stationary engine systems. You will work as a part of a dynamic team to develop control strategy requirements and concepts, design and implement solutions, perform control system calibration and validation, and support issue resolution for both New Technology and New Product Introduction initiatives.

Required Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Professional project experience in engine/powertrain systems, electrical systems/controls modeling, and/or control systems engineering.
  • Strong technical aptitude and proficiency with engineering tools and processes.
  • Demonstrated technical project or program execution capability.
  • Skilled in developing, analyzing, and reviewing SIMULINK and Visio model diagrams.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills, oral and written.

Preferred Experience and Qualifications

What will your typical day look like?

Essential responsibilities include:

  • Developing and enhancing engine, electric drivetrain, and vehicle control system concepts for new technology applications as part of new product introductions.
  • Defining engine, electric drivetrain, and vehicle control feature/diagnostics requirements and documentation.
  • Prototyping new control applications concepts/enhancements through modeling and simulation.
  • Developing MATLAB scripts and SIMULINK models
  • Developing feature test procedures to ensure performance meets requirements.
  • Performing and documenting failure modes analysis (DFMEA).
  • Supporting feature calibration and validation efforts in the engine test cell, integrated hardware simulator testing, locomotive system testing, customer acceptance and field in-service monitoring.
  • Supporting design and documentation updates for safety and regulatory compliance assurance.
  • Supporting commercial requisition and reliability growth through product and platform expansion.

Key competencies include:

  • Leading the execution of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product/program requirements.
  • Leading technical and program reviews as a presenter or reviewer.
  • Recording and reporting technical data and intellectual property generated by the assigned project consistent with engineering policies and procedures.
  • Providing timely communications to key stakeholders on progress, issues, or constraints which impact schedule, costs, scope of work, and/or resources.
  • Collaborating with senior engine, traction & auxiliary, and vehicle control engineers, systems and subsystem engineering, program management, commercial teams, simulation, software, and hardware teams in the application of advanced controls techniques/methods/tools to meet challenging requirements.
  • Demonstrating technical agility and flexibility to support team members and engaging with product and technical experts to broaden design, tools, process, and domain expertise.

What about the physical demands of the job?

  • Ability to perform and support on-site locomotive testing & validation
  • Ability and willingness to travel to customer or testing facilities as required
