Job Description

Illumina is seeking a Manufacturing Equipment Engineer to provide technical leadership in manufacturing sustaining efforts within a high-volume consumables manufacturing environment. The role involves defining and performing preventive maintenance on optical, mechanical, electrical, and fluidics systems to improve equipment uptime and reliability. Responsibilities include troubleshooting manufacturing and equipment process issues using organic chemistry principles, performing basic computer/software troubleshooting, developing and updating manuals, training personnel, and working in a team to enhance equipment reliability. The engineer will also conduct controlled experiments, including Design of Experiments (DOE), to address yield and quality issues and implement solutions. Additionally, the role includes developing or sourcing alternative parts for obsolete components and providing maintenance and process support on night shifts.
Must have:
  • Define and perform preventive maintenance on optical, mechanical, electrical, and fluidics systems
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing process and equipment issues
  • Perform basic computer/software troubleshooting
  • Develop, write and update manuals and procedures
  • Train other engineers and production personnel
  • Improve equipment reliability and uptime
  • Construct and execute controlled experiments (DOE's)
  • Develop or source alternative replacement for obsoleted parts
  • Provide maintenance and process support on night shift
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Experience in writing procedures and training
  • Good inter-departmental communication and documentation skills
  • Ability to work independently
Good to have:
  • Experience with Statistical Process Control, JMP and DOE techniques

Position Summary:

As a Manufacturing Equipment Engineer, you will provide technical leadership in manufacturing sustaining efforts in a high volume, consumables manufacturing environment. You will define and perform preventive maintenance on optical, mechanical, electrical and fluidics systems. You will work to improve equipment uptime and reliability. You will also apply organic chemistry principles in troubleshooting manufacturing and equipment process issues.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Define and perform preventive maintenance on optical, mechanical, electrical and fluidics systems
  • Use mechanical, optical, fluidics and organic chemistry knowledge to troubleshoot manufacturing process and equipment issues, as they arise
  • Perform basic computer/software troubleshooting
  • Develop, write and update manuals and procedures
  • Train other engineers and production personnel on procedure, process and equipment changes
  • Work in a team environment to improve equipment reliability and uptime
  • Construct and execute controlled experiments (including DOE's) to address equipment-related yield and quality issues and drives implementation of solutions in a production environment to meet production goals
  • Develop or source alternative replacement for obsoleted parts and execute changes through change management
  • On night shift, provide maintenance and process support to a high volume manufacturing organization

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years experience in high volume manufacturing environment preferred
  • Candidate has experience with opto/mechanical/electrical system, fluidics and organic chemistry processes (preferably DNA-related)

Competencies:

  • Strong demonstrated mechanical aptitude is required
  • Experience in writing procedures and training is required
  • Basic computer troubleshooting skills are required
  • Good inter-departmental communication skills and documentation skills are required
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently is required
  • Experience with Statistical Process Control, JMP and DOE techniques is a plus

Education:

  • BSc/B. Eng/Masters in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering
  • Diploma with at least 15 years of relevant experience
