The 3D Simulation group at Zoox is seeking a realtime 3D simulation professional to develop Simulation applications for Hardware in the Loop (HIL) platforms. This role involves creating realtime simulations of sensors like lidar, radar, and cameras, with 3D rendering analogous to a flight simulator, to enhance the Zoox autonomy stack. You will develop and support high-fidelity sensor simulations and their interfaces, enabling state-of-the-art HIL testing for collision avoidance, planning, and perception. Collaboration with Verification & Validation of Simulation teams and Zoox’s data management system is key. The work is central to creating in-the-loop simulation and synthetic data for training and testing autonomous vehicle AI.
Must have:
- 2+ years as Technical Lead
- 5+ years developing C++ and Python
- Solid understanding of high performance real time simulation pipelines
- Project management experience
- Excellent communication skills
Good to have:

Job Details
The 3D Simulation group at Zoox is looking for a realtime 3D simulation professional who is adept at developing Simulation applications that drive Hardware in the Loop (HIL) platforms. With realtime simulation of sensors (lidar, radar, and cameras) and live 3D rendering analogous to a flight simulator platform, you’ll enable the Zoox autonomy stack to learn, improve, and cooperate with humans.
Develop and support high-fidelity sensor simulation and their interfaces to the world, for realtime simulation systems that enable state-of-the-art HIL testing of collision avoidance, planning, and perception. Collaborate on Verification & Validation of Simulation, leveraging Zoox’s world class autonomous vehicle data management system.
The 3D Sensor Simulation team’s work is at the core of creating in-the-loop simulation and high fidelity synthetic data for training and testing autonomous vehicle AI.
In this role, you will:
- Design, implement, and validate 3D sensor simulation subsystems deployed in AV HIL and cloud simulation platforms.
- Collaborate with HIL, Hardware, and Synthetic Data teams to develop novel realtime applications.
- Optimize performance and realism of realtime 3D sensor simulation, including lidar, radar, and cameras.
- Partner with Sim V&V engineers to improve metrics ranging from individual sensor fidelity to real-world AV safety reports.
- Lead 3D simulation engineers and establish best practices to steadily improve trustability and test coverage of HIL simulation use cases.
- Participate in code reviews, design reviews, and roadmap planning across a diverse set of cross-team projects.
Qualifications:
- 2+ years of prior experience as a Technical Lead
- 5+ years of experience developing C++ and Python
- Solid understanding of high performance real time simulation pipelines
- Project management experience in teams of many people
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
Bonus Qualifications:
- Experience with sensor calibration, including cameras, lidar, and/or radar
- Experience with verification and validation (V&V) for autonomous systems
- Prior experience developing autonomy in AVs or other robotics and computer vision
Compensation
There are three major components to compensation for this position: salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. The salary will range from $200,000 to $285,000. A sign-on bonus may be part of a compensation package. Compensation will vary based on geographic location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
