Fortra is seeking a Sr. Technical Writer to create and maintain technical documentation for their software products. This role involves developing and implementing technical writing standards, providing leadership to the technical communications team, and mentoring less experienced writers. The ideal candidate will participate in the Agile development process, attend team scrums, and contribute to defining and implementing technical writing initiatives such as best practices, standards, and training. Responsibilities include collaborating with subject matter experts for content review, updating documentation based on product changes, and diagnosing issues for other writers. The position requires comprehensive knowledge of technical writing tools and applications.
Must have:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Technical Writing tools and applications
  • Minimum 10 years as a Technical Writer or equivalent work experience
  • Degree/diploma in Technical Communications or a related field
Good to have:
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of technical writing tools and methodologies
  • Participate in the Agile development process
  • Help define and implement technical writing initiatives, policies, processes, and procedures
  • Exhibit proven leadership of small- to medium-sized Technical Communications team projects

THE ROLE

Responsible for creating and maintaining the technical documents for our software products. Develop and implement technical writing standards and procedures. Assist the Planning team and provide leadership to the full Technical Communications team. Assist and mentor less-experienced writers.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Create/maintain the technical documentation for assigned products/product lines.
    • Create technical documentation, as required.
    • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of technical writing tools and methodologies as required for individual products or product lines.
    • Work with the development project teams to identify and research updates to the technical documentation.
    • Update the content to accommodate changes to the products, requests from other functional areas (such as Support), and changes to the technical writing standards.
    • Work with subject matter experts and peers to review content for publication.
  • Participate in the Agile development process; attend development team scrums and meetings.
  • Help define and implement technical writing initiatives, policies, processes, and procedures (and provide technical direction to the other writers) including:
    • Best practices
    • Standards
    • Training
  • Help with the implementation of Technical Communications team initiatives that require cross-functional collaboration.
  • Participate in peer reviews.
  • Mentor less-experienced writers.
  • Diagnose issues other writers are having with their documentation or tools.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of assigned products and working knowledge of other products.
  • Exhibit proven leadership of small- to medium-sized Technical Communications team projects, such as various corporate-wide technical documentation standards.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of technical writing policies, processes, and procedures; lead the documentation and maintenance of them.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for technical writing through industry certification, professional membership, and/or skill-building seminars.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

    • Comprehensive knowledge of Technical Writing tools and applications
    • Minimum 10 years as a Technical Writer or equivalent work experience

           OR

    • Degree/diploma in Technical Communications or a related field
