⭐Our Sustainability team

An exciting role has opened up in our Legal & Board Governance Collective for a senior sustainability lead with a proven track record in shaping and delivering complex sustainability initiatives. In particular, we are looking for proven experience in assessing and implementing decarbonisation strategies aligned to company goals. This role is crucial in embedding our sustainability commitments into our corporate strategy and daily operation.

In this role, you will report to the Director of Sustainability in achieving Monzo’s environmental and broader sustainability ambitions and work with a variety of stakeholders across the business. The right candidate will be able to deploy traditional program management capabilities and deep expertise in environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles to drive tangible business and environmental outcomes. This role will require working with new and evolving information within a fast-paced organisation and synthesising large volumes of data and information into actionable plans that are aligned with Monzo’s company goals.

🔑 You’ll play a key role by…

  • Strategic development: contribute to the evolution of Monzo’s long-term sustainability strategy, identifying emerging risks, opportunities, and best practices to ensure we remain leaders in the sector.
  • Operationalise our climate strategy: take full ownership of our climate strategy, leading the end-to-end delivery of our decarbonisation plan. This includes managing key reduction projects (like renewable energy procurement and supplier engagement), tracking performance against our targets, and ensuring we meet our public climate commitments.
  • Regulatory expertise: act as an internal expert on evolving environmental and climate-related regulations (e.g., TCFD, CSRD), ensuring Monzo’s compliance and strategic alignment.
  • Business case creation: develop compelling business cases for sustainability initiatives, articulating the return on investment, risk mitigation, and brand value to secure investment and stakeholder buy-in.
  • Performance & reporting: devise and track the key metrics that measure our sustainability performance. Prepare insightful reports, management information, and presentations for senior stakeholders, including the Board, to support strategic decision-making.
  • Cross-functional leadership: collaborate with a diverse range of internal stakeholders (e.g., Product, Finance, Marketing, People) to embed sustainability principles into their workstreams and decision-making processes.
  • Stakeholder management: manage relationships with key external partners, such as climate advisors, industry groups, and technology providers, to advance our sustainability agenda.

🤩 We’d love to hear from you if you…..

  • Are a proven leader in climate strategy and delivery, with extensive experience developing decarbonisation roadmaps (including Scope 3 accounting and setting Science Based Targets) and translating them into successfully executed, data-driven projects.
  • Have deep subject matter expertise in key ESG topics, with a deep specialism in environmental sustainability (e.g., carbon accounting, reporting frameworks, renewable energy).
  • Demonstrate commercial acumen, with experience building business cases and linking sustainability outcomes to financial performance and corporate strategy.
  • Have exceptional communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex sustainability issues clearly and concisely to diverse audiences, from engineers to board members.
  • Work with a strategic & proactive mindset, with a demonstrated ability to identify problems, take initiative, and implement improvements in a fast-paced environment.
  • Have strong influencing skills, with a track record of engaging and influencing people at all levels to drive change and embed new practices across an organisation.
  • Are a professional with at least 8+ years of relevant work experience in complex organisations with a proven track record of driving outcomes

Personal Attributes:

  • Strategic thinker with a pragmatic, results-oriented approach
  • A deep-seated passion for creating a positive environmental and social impact
  • Resilient and tenacious, with the ability to inspire and energize others through challenges
