The Underwriting Manager leads a team of skilled underwriters in Guardian’s 1000+ segment, reporting to the Leader, Underwriting. This role drives high levels of performance through coaching, motivating, and ensuring the technical skill development of team members. Additionally, the manager is responsible for underwriting complex, high-profile cases, demonstrating mastery of advanced risk evaluation and appropriate pricing practices. Key responsibilities include managing workflow, meeting sales and renewal targets, evaluating underwriting judgment, fostering talent, collaborating with other departments, and improving operational efficiency.

  • Meet or exceed sales goals at profitable pricing levels and meet or exceed renewal rate and persistency targets.
  • Independently evaluate the application of Underwriting judgment, pricing decisions, and pricing strategy.
  • Oversee the underwriting skill growth of the team, ensuring a solid technical underwriting foundation.
  • Foster a culture of dedication and talent excellence by effectively recruiting, training, mentoring, motivating, and developing staff.
  • Drive a culture of collaboration, accountability and engagement among team members.
  • Partner broadly with other areas of the organization including: Sales, Client Management, Product, Pricing, Implementation, Legal, Compliance, and Claims.
  • Actively engage in supporting positive consultative outcomes and providing creative solutions.
  • Continually challenge the status quo, developing efficiency and operational improvements through process changes.
  • Establish rapport with internal and external partners to enhance Guardian brand and improve business results.
  • Handle a caseload of complex accounts, assessing risk related to insurance products and recommending appropriate pricing levels.
  • 5+ years of Group Underwriting experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of group contract and benefit provisions, industry trends and competitive pricing practices for all product lines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with strong presentation skills.
  • Superior organizational, time management and prioritization skills.
  • Excellent math and analytical skills.
  • High degree of comfort with the MS Office suite, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

Job Details

The Underwriting Manager is accountable for leading a team of skilled underwriters in Guardian’s 1000+ segment. This role reports to the Leader, Underwriting and will support Guardian’s overall growth and profitability goals by driving high levels of performance through coaching, motivating, and ensuring the technical skill development of team members. Additionally, this role will be responsible for the underwriting of complex, high profile cases (prospective or inforce), demonstrating a mastery of advanced risk evaluation concepts and appropriate pricing practices.

You will

  • Support leadership of the 1000+ underwriting team, including managing workflow, case assignments and staffing
  • Meet or exceed sales goals at profitable pricing levels and meet or exceed renewal rate and persistency targets against profitability measures
  • Independently evaluate the application of Underwriting judgment, pricing decisions, and pricing strategy
  • Oversee the underwriting skill growth of the team, ensuring each team member has a solid technical underwriting foundation. Additionally, you will ensure that each team member (both direct and non-direct reports) has a strong development plan, that progress towards development objectives are on track, and that we are meeting succession planning needs
  • Foster a culture of dedication and talent excellence by effectively recruiting, training, mentoring, motivating, and developing staff, while also supporting diverse talent initiatives.
  • Drive a culture of collaboration, accountability and engagement among team members
  • Partner broadly with other areas of the organization including: Sales, Client Management, Product, Pricing, Implementation, Legal, Compliance, and Claims to bring in new customers and service them and existing customers well
  • Actively engage in supporting the positive consultative outcomes crucial to our long-term success, finding opportunities to provide consultative creative solutions and making recommendations
  • Continually challenge the status quo, developing efficiency and operational improvements through process changes. You will proactively lead change throughout the Underwriting Team and will serve as a key contributor to projects and thought leadership within Underwriting Leadership, the entire Underwriting organization, and Guardian
  • Establish rapport with internal and external partners, including other departments within Guardian, producers, plan sponsors and their members to enhance Guardian brand, and improve new business results and inforce business retention and profitability
  • Handle a caseload of complex accounts (prospective or inforce), assessing risk related to insurance products and ultimately recommending appropriate pricing levels

You have

  • 5+ years of Group Underwriting experience
  • Industry related education (i.e., LOMA, ALU, CLU) preferred
  • Extensive knowledge of group contract and benefit provisions, along with industry trends and competitive pricing practices for all product lines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with strong presentation skills
  • Superior organizational, time management and prioritization skills
  • Excellent math and analytical skills
  • High degree of comfort with the MS Office suite, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint

Salary Range:

The salary range reflected above is a good faith estimate of base pay for the primary location of the position. The salary for this position ultimately will be determined based on the education, experience, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate. In addition to salary, this role may also be eligible for annual, sales, or other incentive compensation.
