The Assignment Desk Editor will manage story assignments, respond to breaking news, provide support, and coordinate logistics for field crews. The editor will also update news stories with the latest information, monitor communications, and participate in editorial meetings. The ideal candidate should be bilingual, have experience in news, and be able to work independently under tight deadlines, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

ABOUT THE ROLE & TEAM:

The Local Media News team at TelevisaUnivision in New York is looking for a Freelance Assignment Desk Editor to join our News team!

You will be responsible for managing story assignments, respond to breaking news, provide support, and coordinate logistics, following up daily workflow for field crews. You’ll gather information from local, state, and national agencies, non-profit organizations, broadcasts, and on-line sources to determine coverage opportunities.

You will report to the Assistant News Director. 

ABOUT YOU:

You should be a strategic and creative thinker, passionate for News, who knows how to develop contacts and sources, and who’s willing to learn new tools, take the lead and share your ideas.

YOUR DAY-DAY:

  • Generate, research, verify, plan, and develop story ideas for our newscasts, as well as bringing breaking news stories to air.

  • Assign news stories, dispatch Reporter/Photographer crews and Multimedia Journalists, make and coordinate appointments with interviewees, and provide accurate addresses and contact information to news crews.

  • Coordinate live remote capabilities for live news stories or interviews.

  • Constantly update news stories with the latest information and developments.

  • Monitor law enforcement and fire communications, check wires, and make beat-checks to determine coverage of spot news and special reports.

  • Feed our social media and digital platforms with local content

  • Arrange, download, and supervise video feeds.

  • Participate in editorial meetings to inform those gathered of events being covered.

YOU HAVE:

  • Good news judgement

  • Fully Bilingual (read and write English/Spanish)

  • BS/BA OR MA in Communications, Journalism, or related field, or equivalent work experience

  • Ideally, two or more years of experience in general market or Spanish language television station as a News Assignment Editor.

  • Ability to work independently, manage breaking news, simultaneous projects and meet tight deadlines

  • Ability to work nights, weekends and holidays with flexibility to alter shifts/days off to accommodate projects and departmental objectives, as well as extended hours during hurricanes and continuous coverage. 

  • Motivation, creativity, and strong organizational skills

  • Have thorough knowledge of current affairs, including city agencies and local newsmakers

  • Knowledge and ability to handle multiple Social Media platforms 

  • Ability to monitor and record various video feeds simultaneously

  • Ability to write copy (in Spanish) and manage system to send push notifications

  • Ability to upload video, digital pictures, and copy to the station’s website preferred
