Job Description

Gearbox Studio seeks a bilingual (French/English) Assistant Art Director specializing in character art. This key role requires a self-driven professional with artistic, technical, and organizational skills. Responsibilities include supporting the Art Direction in defining and maintaining the visual character vision, creating style guides, reviewing and providing feedback on character assets, collaborating with artists and technical teams, mentoring junior artists, and assisting in production organization. The ideal candidate will have 7+ years of experience in character production for video games, expertise in industry-standard tools (ZBrush, Maya/Blender, Substance Painter, Photoshop, Unreal Engine), and a strong understanding of PBR workflows and real-time rendering.

Gearbox Studio, développeur renommé de jeux à succès tels que Borderlands, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands et Brothers in Arms, recherche un·e Assistant·e à la direction artistique – spécialisation personnages.

Ce poste essentiel nécessite une personne bilingue (français et anglais), professionnelle et autonome, alliant harmonieusement compétences artistiques, techniques et organisationnelles. Vous travaillerez en étroite collaboration avec l’équipe tout en veillant à maintenir la vision artistique du projet.

 

En tant que pont entre la direction artistique et l’équipe en charge des personnages, vous garantirez cohérence, qualité et efficacité dans la production, tout en apportant une contribution créative au développement des personnages.

RESPONSABILITÉS

  • Soutenir la direction artistique dans la définition et le maintien de la vision visuelle des personnages, en assurant son alignement avec le style artistique global du jeu.
  • Contribuer à la création de guides de style et de références visuelles pour transmettre efficacement les objectifs artistiques à l’équipe.
  • Évaluer et fournir des rétroactions sur les designs, la modélisation, le texturing et les matériaux afin de garantir une qualité visuelle optimale et une cohérence artistique.
  • Collaborer étroitement avec les artistes concept, les artistes personnages 3D et animateurs pour garantir le respect des standards techniques et artistiques.
  • Assister à la validation des personnages à chaque étape de la production, du concept à l’intégration en jeu.
  • Travailler avec l’équipe technique pour assurer la compatibilité des assets dans le moteur tout en maintenant fidélité visuelle et performance.
  • Offrir mentorat et feedback aux artistes personnages pour renforcer leurs compétences et assurer la cohérence artistique.
  • Soutenir la direction artistique dans l’organisation des réunions, revues et présentations afin de fluidifier la production.
  • Assurer une intégration fluide des personnages en collaborant avec les équipes d’animation, de rigging et de VFX.
  • Travailler avec les designers sur la création des ennemis et des boss.
  • Contribuer à la production d’assets pour le marketing, les supports promotionnels et les cinématiques.
  • Participer à la résolution des défis techniques et artistiques liés à la production des personnages.

 

COMPÉTENCES ET EXPÉRIENCES REQUISES

  • Excellente maîtrise de l’anatomie, des formes, des silhouettes et de la narration visuelle en character design.
  • Compétence avancée sur les outils standards : ZBrush, Maya/Blender, Substance Painter, Photoshop, Unreal Engine.
  • Expertise en workflows PBR, rendu en temps réel et optimisations pour les moteurs de jeu.
  • 7+ ans d’expérience en production de personnages pour le jeu vidéo, avec des titres commercialisés.
  • Expérience en encadrement, gestion de petites équipes ou mentorat d’artistes juniors.
  • Solides compétences en communication et organisation pour faciliter la production des personnages.

Gearbox Studio, a renowned developer of hit games such as Borderlands, Brothers in Arms, and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, is looking for an Assistant Art Director – Character Art Specialization.

 

This key role requires a self-driven bilingual (French and English) professional with a strong balance of artistic, technical, and organizational skills. You will work closely with the team while ensuring the artistic vision of the project is preserved.

As the bridge between the Art Direction and the Character Team, you will ensure consistency, quality, and efficiency in production while contributing creatively to character development.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the Art Direction in defining and maintaining the visual vision for characters, ensuring alignment with the game's overall artistic style.
  • Help create style guides and visual references to effectively communicate artistic goals to the team.
  • Review and provide feedback on designs, modeling, texturing, and materials to ensure visual quality and artistic consistency.
  • Work closely with concept artists, 3D character artists, and animators to uphold technical and artistic standards.
  • Assist in character validation at every stage of production, from concept to in-game integration.
  • Collaborate with the technical team to ensure asset compatibility within the game engine while maintaining high visual fidelity and performance.
  • Mentor and provide feedback to character artists to enhance their skills and maintain artistic cohesion.
  • Support the Art Director in organizing team meetings, reviews, and presentations to streamline production.
  • Ensure smooth character integration by working with animation, rigging, and VFX teams.
  • Work with game designers to develop enemies and bosses.
  • Contribute to asset creation for marketing, promotional materials, and cinematics.
  • Participate in discussions and problem-solving regarding technical and artistic challenges related to character production.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Strong expertise in anatomy, form, silhouette, and visual storytelling for character design.
  • Advanced proficiency with industry-standard tools: ZBrush, Maya/Blender, Substance Painter, Photoshop, Unreal Engine.
  • Deep understanding of PBR workflows, real-time rendering, and game engine optimizations.
  • 7+ years of experience in character production for video games, with a proven track record of shipped titles.
  • Experience in leadership, managing small teams, or mentoring junior artists.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills to facilitate character production.
