Job Description

The Canada Payroll SME will be responsible for processing bi-weekly payroll for over 1000 employees, ensuring accuracy and timeliness. This includes verifying payroll information, working with HR for hires and terminations, preparing payroll remittances, handling annual filings, reconciling benefit carrier payments, recording payroll journals, resolving discrepancies, and answering employee payroll inquiries. They will also be responsible for retroactive payments, tracking employee leaves, streamlining processes, and providing analysis for ad hoc reports. The role involves calculating and validating payroll taxes and contributions, ensuring compliance with Federal and State regulations.
Must have:
  • Undergraduate degree in relevant discipline

  • Advanced English proficiency
  • Basic accounting knowledge
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite
Good to have:
  • Experience in Workday

The Canada Payroll SME will be responsible for payroll processing, maintaining and reconciling payroll records, producing necessary reports, as well as conducting year-end balancing of payroll. Also responsible for the submission of all annual legal payroll related filings (e.g. T4’s, WSIB, EHT) and for the facilitation of statutory audits as required

Key Responsibilities

  • Submit accurate and timely bi-weekly payroll for over 1000 employees. This includes verifying payroll information received from other systems for completeness and accuracy.
  • Work collaboratively with HR to process employee hires, changes, and terminations.
  • Prepare required payroll remittances (e.g. taxes, RRSPs, EHT).
  • Responsible for accurate and timely annual filings and reporting: CRA; T4 and T4s; etc.
  • Reconcile and prepare monthly remittances to benefit carriers (self-administered benefits provider).
  • Record payroll Journals to the General Ledger
  • Identify and resolve payroll discrepancies on a timely basis and calculate manual payroll adjustments. Respond to staff on a timely basis to resolve payroll questions received via ServiceNow tickets, email, phone and in person.
  • Reconcile payroll accounts (e.g. taxes, extended health benefits, RRSPs).
  • Responsible for accurate and timely retroactive payments to employees, as required.
  • Track employee leaves including preparing ROEs as required. Prepare maternity leave top-up calculations.
  • Streamline existing payroll processes to improve workflow.
  • Provide analysis for ad hoc reports for external stakeholders.
  • Calculate and validate payroll related taxes and contributions according to the Federal and State regulations.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline required.
  • 3-5 years of experience in Canada payroll processing, remittance, and annual reporting submissions.
  • Advanced level English proficiency.
  • Basic knowledge of accounting practices & procedures (including account reconciliations).
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite.
  • Experience in Workday is nice to have.
  • French language proficiency is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Good English communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and work to strict deadlines.
