Job Description

The CG Generalist supports the Production in various aspects of the CG Pipeline, including Modeling, Asset Management, Renders, and Technical Direction Support. Responsibilities include shader reassignment, asset cleanup, Cryptomatte and AOV management, set dressing assistance, asset library and file management, rendering turntables, basic modeling and sculpting, quality control, scene optimization, and rapid response tasks. The role requires proficiency in software like Maya, Blender, ZBrush, and Mudbox. The CG Generalist will work in a fast-paced environment to deliver high-quality animation, with a focus on detail and efficiency across multiple episodes. The position requires balancing work across multiple stages of production and involves both creative and technical tasks.

The CG Generalist is responsible for supporting the Production in various aspects of the CG Pipeline, including Organic & Hard-Surface Modeling, Asset Management, Renders, and Technical Direction Support. They will report to the CG Supervisor and Supervising Producer.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Shader Reassignment and Asset Cleanup 

    • Reassign shaders to models in sets or props as needed.
    • Run cleanup scripts on geometry to prepare assets for production use.
    • Ensure assets adhere to the studio’s naming conventions and standards.

Cryptomatte and AOV Management

    • Set up and manage cryptomattes for efficient compositing workflows.
    • Handle basic AOVs and render layers setup in production scenes.

Set Dressing Assistance

    • Assist with set dressing tasks, such as placing props, background elements, or environmental details in a scene.

Asset Library and File Management

    • Organize and catalog assets in the studio’s asset library system.
    • Ingest and track assets from external vendors or other team members.
    • Ensure files are versioned correctly and easily accessible. 

Rendering Turntables 

    • Set up and render turntables for character or prop assets, ensuring accurate lighting and camera setups.
    • Render hero shots with high-quality lighting and composition for review or marketing use.

Basic Modeling and Sculpting

    • Create or modify simple models as needed using tools like Maya, Blender, ZBrush, or Mudbox.
    • Clean up or optimize geometry from scans or kitbashes.

Quality Control and Scene Optimization

    • Check assets and scenes for issues like flipped normals, unnecessary polygons, or bad UVs.
    • Optimize heavy scenes by reducing file sizes, cleaning up unused nodes, or consolidating assets.

Tool and Script Assistance (This is a plus)

    • Help test or modify studio tools and scripts under supervision.
    • Ability to Adjust simple scripts to automate repetitive tasks when necessary.

Rapid Response Tasks and Miscellaneous Fixes

    • Jump into various emergency tasks like fixing broken assets, tweaking animations, or resolving render errors.
    • Provide quick fixes to unexpected issues that pop up during production.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficient in Maya, Blender, Zbrush, Mudbox
  • Ideally 3 plus years of experience in CG television animation or equivalent experience (ie - VFX, Video Games, VR)
  • Ability to multitask and work well under pressure
  • Ability to balance the work of multiple episodes of material across all stages of production
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn applicable design software and hardware

The anticipated base salary for this position is $45/hour to $75/hour. This role qualifies for benefits pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement. The actual salary offered will depend on a variety of factors
