Job Summary

The Story Apprentice closely partners with the Head of Story and Lead Story Artist(s) on the production to explore options when working on storyboard cleanup and revisions, thumbnails, rough drawings, and completed panels on a feature in production. Responsibilities include concept, design, and development of locations, sets, layouts, moments, and props, exploring various stylizations, and ideating artistic expressions. The role involves engaging in training, collaborating with a Mentor/Supervising Artist, and contributing to Art Department meetings.

Must Have

  • Concept, design, and/or develop locations, sets, layouts, moments, and props for the project.
  • Explore, conceptualize, and design a variety of stylizations, looks, and visual directions.
  • Ideate and discover artistic expressions to enhance concepts and designs.
  • Fully engage in all training activities and classes.
  • Collaborate with and address notes from a Mentor/Supervising Artist.
  • Proactively engage and collaborate with the Art Department.
  • Attend and contribute to all Art Department Meetings.
  • Outstanding research skills and an understanding of environment design and world-building.
  • Drawings or paintings that demonstrate a strong understanding of perspective, color, composition, texture, and lighting.
  • Ability to work independently and remotely.
  • Time-management ability to meet real deadlines.
  • Photoshop knowledge.

Good to Have

  • Exposure to the art of animation through an independent or collaborative film project(s).

SUMMARY:

The Story Apprentice closely partners with the Head of Story and Lead Story Artist(s) on the production to explore options when working on storyboard cleanup and revisions, thumbnails, rough drawings, and completed panels on a feature in production.

Sony Pictures Animation is a pre-production animation studio based in Los Angeles, California, creating both feature animation and animated series with artists from around the world. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Concept, design, and or develop locations, sets, layouts, moments, and props for the project based on the directors' vision
  • Explore, conceptualize, and design a variety of stylizations, looks, and visual directions
  • Ideate and discover artistic expressions to enhance concepts and designs
  • Fully engage in all training activities and classes
  • Collaborate with and address notes from a Mentor/Supervising Artist in completion of all assignments
  • Proactively engage and collaborate with the Art Department
  • Attend and contribute to all Art Department Meetings

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Outstanding research skills and an understanding of environment design and world-building
  • Drawings or paintings that demonstrate a strong understanding of perspective, color, composition, texture, and lighting
  • Ability to work independently and remotely
  • Time-management ability to meet real deadlines
  • Exposure to the art of animation through an independent or collaborative film project(s) helpful
  • Positive attitude with the ability to be flexible!
  • Photoshop knowledge

The anticipated base salary for this position is $28.44/hour to $35.35/hour. This role qualifies for benefits pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement. The actual salary offered will depend on a variety of factors
