Job Description

Sony Pictures Animation is seeking a Production Designer to establish and maintain the visual style and quality for their animated series. This role, covered by The Animation Guild, is based in Los Angeles. The studio focuses on empowering filmmakers to create bold and innovative visual storytelling for both feature films and series, collaborating with artists globally.
Must Have:
  • Achieve creative ambitions within show’s schedule and budget.
  • Develop and implement clear design vision for characters, locations, props, FX, lighting, and color.
  • Communicate design requirements to Design Team and Partner Studio.
  • Assign specific design projects to artists.
  • Create rough and clean designs as needed.
  • Attend and contribute to color reviews, assisting with revisions.
  • Supervise creation and maintenance of model packs and style guides.
  • Mentor and provide positive support to the Design Team.
  • Participate in talent acquisition by interviewing candidates.
  • Report and troubleshoot project status with the production team.
  • Work with Marketing Team to create assets for marketing purposes.
  • 5-7 years experience as Production Designer, Art Director, Supervisor, or in CG television animation.
  • Prior leadership experience.
  • Deep knowledge of color theory, lighting, staging, and perspective.
  • Proficiency in drawing, design, and digital media.
  • Mastery of creating concepts and turnarounds for characters, props, and sets, overseeing them into 3D.
  • Strong and clear communication skills.
  • Experienced in 3D design workflows (Modo, Maya, Zbrush).
  • Ability to clearly communicate the style of the show.
  • Strong creative leadership skills through positive feedback and constructive critiques.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Production and Creative Leads to achieve creative ambitions within the show’s schedule and budget
  • Develop and implement a clear design vision (characters, locations, props, backgrounds, FX, lighting, color) that supports the style and story of the project
  • Communicate overall design requirements and expected level of polish to the Design Team and Partner Studio
  • Assign specific design projects to artists on the Design team
  • Create rough and clean designs as needed to ensure adherence to budget and schedule
  • Attend and contribute to color reviews, assisting with revisions as needed
  • Supervise creation and maintenance of model packs and style guides for our Partner Studio (expressions, character construction, mouth charts, character turnarounds, props, main backgrounds, etc.)
  • Mentor and provide positive support to the Design Team
  • Work with the Line Producer and Recruiting to interview candidates and participate in talent acquisition
  • Communicate project status by reporting and troubleshooting with the production team on a regular basis
  • Work with the Marketing Team and show leadership in creation of assets for marketing purposes

Requirements

  • Prior 5-7 years experience as Prod Designer, Art Director, Supervisor, or in CG television animation
  • Prior leadership experience
  • Deep knowledge of color theory, lighting, staging, and perspective
  • Must exhibit a proficiency in drawing, design, and digital media
  • Mastery of creating concepts and turnarounds for characters, props, and sets, overseeing them into 3D
  • Strong and clear communication skills, especially in times of troubleshooting
  • Experienced in 3D design workflows (Modo, Maya, Zbrush)
  • Ability to communicate clearly the style of the show
  • Strong creative leadership skills through positive feedback and a constructive critiques

The anticipated base salary for this position is $3,200/week to $4,200/week. This role qualifies for benefits pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement.
