Job Description

The Controls Engineer is responsible for providing high-quality design and implementation support for Stem's AlsoEnergy SCADA and Power Plant Control products for our rapidly growing customer base, delivering solutions to both technical and non-technical end users. This role involves designing, constructing, and integrating Power Plant Control (PPC) and Energy Management System (EMS) implementations, along with Data Acquisition Systems (DAS) & SCADA for renewable generation systems. The engineer will also conduct testing, manage SCADA development, and provide technical advice.
Must have:
  • Identify customer goals and design, document, and implement projects.
  • Design, construct, and integrate PPC, EMS, DAS, & SCADA for renewable systems.
  • Conduct and document testing, including Bench Testing, FAT, and SAT.
  • Develop, integrate, and support new processes, products, and standardizations.
  • Manage SCADA development around Ignition HMI and Stem's platforms.
  • Provide timely technical advice on PPC, EMS, DAS, and SCADA.
  • Help customers, support, and Field Service Teams solve technical issues.
  • Support plant commissioning activities with occasional travel.
  • Independently manage project pipelines and stakeholder expectations.
  • 3 years of controls engineering experience.
  • Experience designing, tuning, and troubleshooting PI and PID loops.
  • Experience with Industrial SCADA/EMS platforms.
  • Experience with SQL databases.
  • Knowledge of Modbus, DNP3, OPC, IEC-60870, FTP protocols.
  • Competency in Python, C#, Java, Visual Basic, IEC-61131 ST.
  • Experience integrating industrial networking hardware and serial communications.
  • Experience with systematic design, tuning, and troubleshooting complex control systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering and minimum 3 years of experience.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely.
  • Must be a team player, good listener, and problem solver.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Good to have:
  • Inductive Automation’s Ignition platform experience
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices and requirements (NERC-CIP)
  • Familiarity with virtualization technologies

The Controls Engineer is responsible for providing high-quality design and implementation support for Stem's AlsoEnergy SCADA and Power Plant Control products for our rapidly growing customer base, delivering solutions to both technical and non-technical end users.

Responsibilities:

  • Identifies customer goals and designs, documents, and implements projects to requirements.
  • Designs, constructs, and integrates Power Plant Control (PPC) and Energy Management System (EMS) implementations along with Data Acquisition Systems (DAS) & SCADA for the Consumer & Industrial and Utility renewable generation systems.
  • Conducts and documents testing, including Bench Testing, FAT, and SAT.
  • Develops, integrates, and supports new processes, products, and standardizations.
  • Manages and owns SCADA development efforts around Ignition HMI and Stem's AlsoEnergy PowerManager and PowerTrack platforms.
  • Provides appropriate and timely technical advice on matters relating to PPC, EMS, DAS, and SCADA.
  • Helps customers, support, and Field Service Teams solve technical issues with products.
  • Supports plant commissioning activities with occasional travel to critical sites as needed up to 15% of the time.
  • Independently manages project pipelines and stakeholder expectations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Technical Knowledge:

  • 3 years of controls engineering experience.
  • Experience designing, tuning, and troubleshooting PI and PID loops.
  • Experience with Industrial SCADA/EMS platforms. Inductive Automation’s Ignition platform experience is a plus.
  • Experience with SQL databases.
  • Knowledge of two or more of the following communication protocols: Modbus, DNP3, OPC, IEC-60870, FTP.
  • Competency in any of the following programming languages: Python, C#, Java, Visual Basic, IEC-61131 ST
  • Experience integrating industrial networking hardware and serial communications.
  • Experience with systematic design, tuning, and troubleshooting of complex control systems.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices and requirements (NERC-CIP) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with virtualization technologies is a plus.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering and minimum 3 years of experience in field or in a related area.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely to non-SMEs.
  • Must be a team player, a good listener, and have the ability to understand and solve customer problems.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision

Location:

  • This is a hybrid role based out of our Broomfield, CO office.
