The Test Lab at Trek Headquarters in Waterloo helps to guide the next generation of bicycle components and accessories through destructive and performance-based testing of prototype frames, forks and components. We work closely with every branch of product engineering to find novel solutions that define category-leading performance and allow us to create products we love.
As a Control Systems Engineer, you will be helping us by designing, updating, and maintaining the controls, electronics, and electromechanical systems that populate our Test Labs around the globe. The Test Lab is a small, dynamic team and we’re looking for someone with a deep love of technology and a learn-it-all mentality. Responsibilities
- Design new PLC-based (Beckhoff) control systems for existing and novel test equipment
- Design and assemble control panels for pneumatic and electromechanical systems
- Specify safety sensors, safety circuits, and operator-interaction for new test equipment designs
- Be the expert in sensor selection, data acquisition, and data quality within the department
- Be able to switch between a rapid-prototyping mentality to create minimum viable solutions and create robust production-ready designs with complete and thorough documentation
- Work with other engineers to understand relevant test standards and ensure compliant equipment
- Have a continuous improvement mindset and always be looking for places to increase efficiency and organization
- Communicate effectively with team members within engineering and other departments. The Test Lab is an inherently service-driven team and good communication skills are a must
- Assisting our team members around the globe to troubleshoot and upgrade existing test systems
- Travel to our test labs around the globe for equipment installations, maintenance, and technician training. Travel up to two times per year, one to two weeks per trip
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering
- 3+ years of experience in control system design
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Extensive programming experience in any language, preferably Structured Text
- Extensive control panel design experience for single and three phase systems
- Experience with industrial sensors and data acquisition systems. Knowledge of high-speed sampling a plus
- Extensive knowledge of electrical circuits, component selection, and assembly
- Experience with motion control systems including servos, steppers, and AC Motors
- Experience with pneumatic system design

- Ability to lift to 50 lbs.
