Job Description

Trek is seeking a passionate cyclist to lead its wheel and tire development team as the Director, Wheelworks. This role is responsible for defining the vision for bicycle OE and aftermarket products, managing sub-categories within the bicycle business, including the Bontrager Wheelworks Brand, from strategy and conception through design, development, and product launch. The position will also lead activities supporting the broader bicycle business and own the product lifecycle growth, process, and continuous improvement. Key responsibilities include defining the business vision, managing business activity, leading development groups, overseeing product development with targets for positioning, performance, functionality, and cost, defining product specifications, managing quality assurance, setting success metrics, tracking product performance, organizing and planning multiple projects, making timely decisions, managing daily actions of the development team, driving design efforts, conducting market research, sales analysis, and maintaining product line logic. The role requires international travel (30-40%) and travel to partners, tradeshows, dealers, and consumer events (3-5 trips per year).

Job Description

Trek is looking for a passionate cyclist to lead a wheel and tire development team as the Director, Wheelworks. This person will define the vision for a bicycle OE and aftermarket product that our riders and retailers love.

This dream job is responsible for the management of sub-categories within the bicycle business, including the Bontrager Wheelworks Brand from strategy and conception through design, development, and product launch.  In addition, this position will lead varying activities that support the bicycle business as a whole.  You will own the life-cycle growth, process, and continuous improvement of the profile of products.

This role will be based at Trek’s HQ in Waterloo, WI and will report directly to the VP of Product.

Responsibilities:

  • Defining the Vision for the Business at Trek
  • Directly Managing the business activity and being the Leader of the broader development group. Managing a Product Manager may also be required.
  • Oversee the development of OE and Aftermarket Products within sub-categories by establishing key targets for product positioning, performance parameters, functionality and cost.
  • Define product specifications, establish milestones, and manage quality assurance activities for a cross-functional team mobile development team
  • Define success metrics for new projects and track the performance of existing products to ensure the team is moving towards defined goals.
  • Organize and plan details for multiple projects and make timely and quick decisions in order to meet project deadlines. Manage daily actions of the development team as well as drive design efforts (internal or external) so that the vision for the line is accurately executed.
  • Other duties including: market research, sales analysis etc.
  • An understanding of creation and maintenance of the entire Product Line, including SKU information, Bike Model BOM’s, preliminary forecasting, cost targets and key features/benefits.
  • Maintain line logic that will result in the product line meeting targets for simplicity and business growth using market feedback along with sales and production data.
  • International travel (30-40%)
  • Travel to partners, tradeshows, dealers, and consumer events to research and track market trends. (3-5 trips per year)

Position Requirements:

  • Bicycle industry experience required and prior leadership experience
  • This individual must have a demonstrated work history of team collaboration and the ability to make their teammates excel.
  • Successful candidates must be able to separate what they think versus what is needed by the market.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively at all levels of organization.
  • Display strong organizational skills and be able to handle multiple tasks and manage priorities in a focused but flexible manner.
  • Must have a great attention for detail
  • Display strong Mechanical understanding with bikes
  • Possess a love for all things Cycling
