Sodexo is seeking an Employee Relations and Labor Relations Manager for Eastern Canada, covering Quebec and the Maritimes. This hybrid role involves being the primary contact for HR and labor relations issues in a decentralized, multi-site environment. Key responsibilities include collective bargaining, grievance management, dispute resolution, ensuring HR policy compliance, conducting employee investigations, and performing compliance audits. The manager will also advise on employee relations, support unit openings/demobilizations, and guide on non-occupational absences. Additionally, the role involves advising on labor relations, acting as lead spokesperson in collective bargaining, and fostering positive union relationships, alongside leading special HR projects.
Must have:
  • Advise on employee relations (progressive discipline, coaching, attendance management).
  • Lead HR activities for unit openings/demobilizations.
  • Advise on non-occupational absences, return to work, accommodations.
  • Conduct regular on-site audits for provincial legislative compliance.
  • Advise on labor relations (contract administration, grievance management up to arbitration).
  • Act as lead spokesperson in collective bargaining negotiations.
  • Provide labor relations advice and updates to management.
  • Establish positive working relationships with union partners.
  • Support change management and lead assigned HR projects.
  • University degree in labor law, HR, industrial relations.
  • At least 5 years progressive experience in employee and labor relations in a unionized environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask.
  • In-depth knowledge of labor law, practices, and principles.
  • Strong influencing skills and ability to interact at all levels.
  • Experience in negotiation preparation and acting as lead spokesperson.
  • Experience participating in mediations and arbitrations.
  • Available to travel to Quebec and Maritimes (approx. 30%).
  • Bilingual French/English (mandatory).

Our Human Resources team is looking for an HR Manager for Eastern Canada.

Hybrid work policy: 2 days a week in the office.

Sodexo is looking for an Employee Relations and Labor Relations Manager for the provinces of Quebec and the Maritimes. You will be the first point of contact for all human resources and labor relations issues at the unit level (decentralized and multi-site environment): collective bargaining, grievance management, and dispute resolution. You will be the guardian of HR policy compliance, conduct sensitive employee investigations, perform HR compliance audits, and bring improvements to our practices. You will work closely with HR experts to support units and promote unit openings and demobilizations.

Job Description

How you will make an impact:

Employee Relations (60%)

  • Advises and guides operational management on all employee relations matters concerning progressive discipline, coaching, attendance management, etc.
  • Leads HR activities to support unit openings and demobilizations.
  • Advises front-line leaders on matters related to non-occupational absences, return to work, accommodations, and leaves.
  • Partners with other experts to resolve allegations of unfair treatment.
  • Regularly conducts on-site audits to ensure compliance with provincial legislative requirements and addresses key workforce issues: absenteeism, workforce planning, efficiency, overtime, training, etc.

Labor Relations (35%)

  • Advises and guides operational management on all labor relations matters (e.g., contract administration, grievance management up to arbitration), government compliance issues (labor standards law and all legislative matters).
  • Assumes responsibility and acts as lead spokesperson during collective agreement negotiations, including mediations and the resolution of complex or sensitive labor relations issues.
  • Provides labor relations advice and offers updates to management and the human resources team to ensure resolutions are aligned with the company at all levels.
  • Establishes and fosters positive working relationships with the company's union partners by recommending and implementing strategies and processes to support these objectives.

Special Projects (5%)

  • Supports change management to promote the implementation of key initiatives within the company.
  • Leads assigned HR projects within the defined portfolio.

Qualifications

What you will need to succeed:

  • University degree in a related field: labor law, human resources, labor, industrial relations.
  • At least five years of progressive experience in employee relations and labor relations in a unionized environment.
  • Previous operational experience in a decentralized company across multiple provinces is an asset.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • In-depth knowledge of labor law, practices, and principles associated with front-line experience in work situations.
  • Strong influencing skills and ability to interact at all levels.
  • Experience in research and negotiation preparation, as well as acting as lead spokesperson in multiple collective agreements and labor dispute resolution.
  • Experience participating and contributing to mediations and arbitrations, as a representative of the organization and its interests.
  • Experience in the service sector would be an asset.
  • Available to travel to Quebec and the Maritimes approximately 30%.
  • Bilingual French / English (mandatory)
