Job Description

The Engineer, Body Structures role involves designing and releasing sheet metal components for new electric pick-up trucks and SUVs. Responsibilities include managing part design to meet cost, weight, and performance targets, conducting analysis, developing CAD models, and participating in simulation environment creation. The role requires collaboration, supporting prototype development, and proposing system improvements. It also involves contributing to the design of production facilities and managing resources. This role is based in Novi, Michigan, and requires regular in-office attendance and travel to the South Carolina plant.
Must have:
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.
  • 6+ years of experience in Closures or Body Structures CAD development.
  • Expert in utilizing CATIA V5 and/or 3DX.
  • Strong technical skills in sheet metal design.
Good to have:
  • Familiarity with computer-aided engineering (CAE).

What you’ll do

Become part of an iconic brand that is set to revolutionize the electric pick-up truck & rugged SUV marketplace by achieving the following:

  • Responsible for sheet metal design and release of body structure stampings and assemblies for new products, ensuring innovative and optimized solutions for Scout vehicles.
  • Manage the design of parts to meet cost, weight, and vehicle performance targets at all design milestones.
  • Conduct analysis of sections, components, and sub-systems to drive the design of part to support the overall vehicle efficiencies.
  • Develop CAD to support design alternative studies and production development of parts.
  • Participate in collaborative design and creation of a simulation environment for testing new body system concepts and ideas related to vehicle handling, safety features, and overall driving experience.
  • Support the development prototypes for virtual and physical verification testing, including field testing.
  • Proactively stay attuned to consumer experience and propose system improvements accordingly.
  • Contribute to the design of production facilities for body systems of the Scout trucks & SUVs.
  • Manage resources efficiently including supplier partners.
  • Be a key member within the body structures team and liaison with all Scout functions.

Location & Travel Expectations:

  • This role will be based out of the Scout Motors location in Novi, Michigan.
  • The responsibilities of this role require 3-5 days attendance in office with in-person meetings and events regularly. 
  • Applicants should expect that the role will require the ability to convene with Scout colleagues in person and travel to participate in events on behalf of the company from time to time.
  • Travel: Travel to support pre-production builds and production startup in our South Carolina plant.

  • Education/Certifications: A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in design, vehicle design and or mechanical engineering, or a relevant field.
  • Years of Experience required in type of role: Minimum 6+years of experience in Closures or Body Structures CAD development and data collection (i.e. TCE, VW connect, or other similar systems).
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Expert in utilizing CATIA V5 and/or 3DX for designing and developing detailed parts.
  • Willingness to train team in 3DX usage
  • Strong technical skills and expertise in sheet metal design of body structures components and systems.
  • Familiarity with computer-aided engineering (CAE) or direct experience in this field.
  • Ability to manage remote teams that are in Mexico or off shores.

Pay Transparency

This is a full-time, exempt position eligible to receive a base salary and to participate in an annual performance bonus program. Final salary offered will be determined based on factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills and experience. The annual performance bonus program is preset and not candidate dependent.

Initial base salary range = $100,000.00 - $110,000.00
