As a Senior Staff Software Engineer for Digital Products at Scout Motors, you will lead a team in developing scalable mobile applications for Android and iOS using React Native. This role involves architecting solutions, defining best practices for mobile development, mentoring engineers, and collaborating with product and design teams to deliver seamless user experiences. You will drive the technical roadmap, ensure alignment with business goals, and contribute hands-on to key systems, focusing on order management, customer management, and vehicle connectivity products.
Must have:
  • Architect, design, and develop scalable and performant mobile applications for Android and iOS.
  • Define and drive implementation of best practices in mobile development, including accessibility, security, testing, performance, scaling, and maintainability.
  • Lead and mentor engineers across multiple squads, fostering growth and raising the technical bar for mobile app development.
  • Work with Product and Design teams to deliver seamless and pixel perfect user experiences while balancing technical feasibility and scalability.
  • Make critical decisions on frameworks, tooling, and component architecture to support long-term code health and efficiency.
  • Lead the technical roadmap, ensure alignment with business goals, and guide major initiatives from concept to launch.
  • Collaborate with backend and platform engineers to ensure smooth integration and consistency across the digital stack.
  • Be a hands-on contributor while influencing engineering culture and processes across the team.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 10+ years in software development and experience with scaling software products (with at least 6+ years specific to mobile development).
  • 4+ years in technical leadership roles focused on mobile app development, preferably with cross-platform apps using React Native.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Deep expertise with mobile app development languages (Java/Kotlin, Objective C/Swift, and React Native) with experience using NodeJS and TypeScript.
  • Proven ability to define and drive the architectural direction for large-scale applications, with extensive experience building complex applications that consume CRUD operations in GraphQL, RESTful, and/or RPC APIs.
  • Deep knowledge of UI/UX design principles, mobile-first design, performance optimization.
  • Deep understanding and practical experience in identifying, mitigating, and preventing common security and sensitive information vulnerabilities.
  • Experience interfacing with an IAM / SSO system like Azure, Okta, or Auth0.
  • Exposure to analytics, experimentation platforms, and feature flagging tools.
  • Deep understanding of robust branching strategies, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing tools/frameworks (Appium, Jest, Karma, Playwright), and cloud environments (AWS preferred).
  • Significant contribution to technical roadmaps and strategic planning.
  • Experience operating in start-up settings, launching 0 to 1 product.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Good to have:
  • Prior experience working experience in a manufacturing or automotive environment.
  • Familiarity with AWS systems.
  • An understanding of full-stack development, specifically backend services.

Overview

As the Senior Staff Software Engineer for Scout Motor’s Engineer for Scout Motor’s digital products, you will be responsible for leading a team of highly skilled software engineers and driving the development of digital solutions for our customers and business partners. Some of the key products as part of digital portfolio are – order management, customer management, marketing, production, inventory and planning optimization, loyalty, merchandise, servicing and repairs, mobile apps, vehicle connectivity, and more. You will work with engineering managers, senior engineers, and cross-functional partners to design the technical underpinnings of the product. At the same time, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to be hands-on building key systems and will be directly responsible for the successful delivery of complex and large-scale technical efforts as well acting as a technical mentor and leader for other engineers.

Location & Travel Expectations:

  • This role will be based out of the Scout Motors location Fremont, California.
  • The responsibilities of this role require 1 day per week attendance in office with in-person meetings and events regularly.
  • Applicants should expect that the role will require the ability to convene with Scout colleagues in person and travel to participate in events on behalf of the company from time to time.

  • Years of Experience: 10+ years in software development and experience with scaling software products (with at least 6+ years specific to mobile development), and 4+ years in technical leadership roles focused on mobile app development, preferably with cross-platform apps using React Native
  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Deep expertise with mobile app development languages (Java/Kotlin, Objective C/Swift, and React Native) with experience using NodeJS and TypeScript
  • Proven ability to define and drive the architectural direction for large-scale applications, with extensive experience building complex applications that consume CRUD operations in GraphQL, RESTful, and/or RPC APIs—ensuring long-term scalability, maintainability, and performance
  • Deep knowledge of UI/UX design principles, mobile-first design, performance optimization, and a desire to create pixel perfect layouts
  • Deep understanding and practical experience in identifying, mitigating, and preventing common security and sensitive information vulnerabilities like Cross-Site Scripting (XSS), deep linking vulnerability, network and API security, SQL injection). This includes a strong command of security best practices, secure coding principles, and experience integrating security into the development lifecycle.
  • Experience interfacing with an IAM / SSO system like Azure, Okta, or Auth0
  • Exposure to analytics, experimentation platforms, and feature flagging tools.
  • Deep understanding of robust branching strategies, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing tools/frameworks (Appium, Jest, Karma, Playwright), and cloud environments (AWS preferred).

Pay Transparency

This is a full-time, exempt position eligible to receive a base salary and to participate in an annual performance bonus program. Final salary offered will be determined based on factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills and experience. The annual performance bonus program is preset and not candidate dependent.

Initial California base salary range = $220,000.00 - $242,000.00
