The Engineer 1 will be a ember of a multidisciplinary team responsible for the development of consumables and integrated systems for genetic analysis. Focus on design, modeling, materials selection, prototyping and testing of high-volume consumable/disposable devices. Manage development cycle from early innovation, through development, into manufacturing transfer and commercialization.
Responsibilities:
- Design, analyze, test, and qualify consumable/disposable devices from early development into full scale manufacturing.
- Conduct tolerance analyses and produce component and assembly level specifications.
- Work with broader team to define specifications, critical parameters, test plans, etc.
- Develop test plans/protocols, conduct characterization studies, and draft reports to document design verification activities.
- Independently plan, manage, and prioritize tasks/projects, track progress toward project goals, and provides periodic updates to core team.
- Collaborate across sites with cross-disciplines like user experience, industrial design, manufacturing process, packaging, fluidics, chemistry, etc. to support development efforts.
- Work with suppliers for component/assembly prototyping and production.
Skills and Experience:
- Desire to focus on design and development of injection plastic components for consumable devices with human factors consideration.
- Basic knowledge or experienced in plastics manufacturing, particularly injection molding. Blow molding, rotational molding, compression molding experience a plus.
- Ability to thrive in an environment where there is ambiguity or uncertainty in product requirements and has a willingness to try and test new ideas.
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Experience working in a highly collaborative cross-disciplinary team environment.
- Experience in Design of Experiments (DOE) planning and execution considered a plus.
- Understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles and dFMEA considered a plus.
Requirements:
- B.S. or M.S. in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, material science or related field with 0-3 years of experience in medical product design and development.
- Solid grasp of engineering fundamentals (mechanics of materials, materials, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, etc.)
- Experience creating 3D models and 2D drawings in CAD (SolidWorks preferred)
- Experience using GD&T and tolerance analysis preferred.
- Familiarity with machine shop tools and 3D printing for prototyping
- Strong verbal/written communication and presentation skills.
- Thrives in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment
