Job Description

As a Lighting Artist at Ubisoft Québec, you will refine the details of 3D environments, contributing to a cohesive and immersive world. Your role involves shaping the atmosphere and visual identity of the game, researching visual references, adjusting light sources based on narrative elements and gameplay progression, and lighting game environments, characters, and cinematics. You will balance artistic vision with technical constraints, document best practices, and refine in-game lighting effects based on feedback. The goal is to guide players’ attention, evoke emotions, and establish specific atmospheres to enhance the gameplay experience.
Must have:
  • 3 years of experience in lighting, texturing, or related fields
  • Knowledge of 2D art tools (e.g., Photoshop)
  • Familiarity with 3D software (e.g., 3DS Max) and game engines (e.g., Unity or Unreal)
  • Solid understanding of artistic fundamentals (composition, space, color theory, form, etc.)
  • Ability to accept and adapt to feedback
  • Strong observational, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Creative and collaborative mindset
  • Strong aesthetic sense and a keen eye for subtle details

Job Details

As a Lighting Artist at Ubisoft Québec, you’ll polish the details of 3D environments and help create a cohesive, vibrant, and immersive world. Every choice you make—from color to contrast—will evoke emotions in players and contribute to a memorable gameplay experience.

With the eye of both an artist and a technician, you'll craft lighting thoughtfully and intuitively to guide players’ attention to specific areas and subtly show them where to go next. You'll act as their invisible travel companion, channeling their intuition. Your work will help them progress through the game while immersing them in the varied moods and atmospheres you create.

What you’ll do

  • Collaborate with the art team to shape the atmosphere and visual identity of the game
  • Research visual references in line with the artistic and technical direction
  • Adjust light sources based on narrative elements and gameplay progression
  • Light game environments, characters, and cinematics to capture player attention, evoke emotion, and establish specific atmospheres and intrigue
  • Balance artistic vision with technical constraints
  • Document and share your knowledge and best practices in lighting design
  • Refine your in-game lighting effects based on feedback from cross-disciplinary teams, debugging when needed

QUALIFICATIONS

What you bring to the team

  • At least 3 years of experience in lighting, texturing, image processing, or other relevant fields (experience in photography, computer graphics, or pre-rendered media is a plus)
  • Knowledge of 2D art tools (e.g., Photoshop) and familiarity with 3D software (e.g., 3DS Max) and game engines (e.g., Unity or Unreal)
  • A solid understanding of artistic fundamentals (composition, space, color theory, form, etc.)
  • The ability to accept and adapt to feedback
  • Strong observational, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • A creative and collaborative mindset
  • A strong aesthetic sense and a keen eye for subtle details

Please note: We follow a flexible hybrid model with at least 3 days in-office and up to 2 days working from home each week, as we value in-person collaboration.
