Job Description

We are seeking a Mainframe Performance and Capacity Management Engineer to join our team. In this critical role, you'll oversee real-time performance monitoring, anomaly detection, and incident prevention to support our mission-critical workloads on z/OS platforms. Your expertise will directly influence the efficiency, reliability, and scalability of our mainframe infrastructure. As a Mainframe System Engineer, responsibilities include monitoring real-time z/OS system health and performance metrics across CPU, memory, DASD, and WLM-managed workloads using various tools. You will also analyze performance data, troubleshoot anomalies, resolve resource conflicts, participate in on-call rotations, and assist in migrating tooling to Git-based change management and DevOps pipelines.
Must have:
  • Monitor real-time z/OS system health and performance metrics across CPU, memory, DASD, and WLM-managed workloads.
  • Analyze performance data for trends, bottlenecks, and potential issues.
  • Diagnose anomalies and resolve resource conflicts.
  • Participate in on-call rotations to ensure timely response to performance issues.
  • Assist in migrating performance and capacity tooling to Git-based change management and DevOps pipelines.
  • 10+ years of mainframe systems experience with in-depth proficiency in performance management.
  • Proven expertise in mainframe performance monitoring, observability, capacity management, and data analysis.
  • Hands-on experience resolving performance issues via WLM and batch initiator adjustments.
  • Strong understanding of PR/SM and mainframe hardware architecture.
  • Skilled in REXX, Python, JCL, and familiarity with DB2.
  • Knowledge of Batch Processing and Job Scheduling.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with mainframe monitoring tools and performance tuning techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with large, high-transaction datasets to extract actionable insights.

Our challenge:

We are seeking a Mainframe Performance and Capacity Management Engineer to join our team. In this critical role, you'll oversee real-time performance monitoring, anomaly detection, and incident prevention to support our mission-critical workloads on z/OS platforms. Your expertise will directly influence the efficiency, reliability, and scalability of our mainframe infrastructure.

Additional Information:

The base salary for this position will vary based on geography and other factors. In accordance with law, the base salary for this role if filled within Montreal is CAD $85k – CAD $90k/year & benefits (see below).

The Role: Mainframe System Engineer

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor real-time z/OS system health and performance metrics across CPU, memory, DASD, and WLM-managed workloads using tools such as RMF, SmartIS, IzPCA, MICS, and internal monitoring solutions.
  • Analyze performance data for trends, bottlenecks, and potential issues; troubleshoot anomalies and resolve resource conflicts.
  • Participate in on-call rotations to ensure timely response to performance issues.
  • Assist in migrating performance and capacity tooling to Git-based change management and DevOps pipelines.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of mainframe systems experience with in-depth proficiency in performance management for large, multi-processor, multi-LPAR, Parallel Sysplex environments utilizing z/OS.
  • Proven expertise in mainframe performance monitoring, observability, capacity management, and data analysis.
  • Hands-on experience resolving performance issues via WLM and batch initiator adjustments.
  • Strong understanding of PR/SM and mainframe hardware architecture.
  • Skilled in REXX, Python, JCL, and familiarity with DB2.
  • Knowledge of Batch Processing and Job Scheduling.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Excel (charts, pivot tables, VLOOKUP, PowerPivot) and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with mainframe monitoring tools and performance tuning techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with large, high-transaction datasets to extract actionable insights.
  • DevOps experience and familiarity with ADABAS are pluses.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Deep familiarity with SMF/RMF data, WLM service definitions, and z/OS workload behavior.
  • Experience with IBM SCRT, MICS, and iZPCA products is highly desirable.
