Job Description

At Apple, the Manufacturing Design Engineering Manager will lead the development and implementation of high-precision mechanical fabrication processes for iPhone products in a high-volume environment. This role involves direct collaboration with Industrial Design, Product Design, and manufacturing partners, requiring technical expertise and leadership of an engineering team. Key responsibilities include process development, new product introduction, and supplier execution, ensuring alignment with design capabilities and program goals.

  • Assess supplier readiness for build events and production ramp.

In this highly visible role, our Manufacturing Design Engineering Manager will lead development and implementation of high precision mechanical fabrication processes in a high volume environment for Products. As a Manufacturing Design Team lead, you will have direct communication and collaboration with Industrial Design, Product Design, Manufacturing Design partners and worldwide suppliers. You'll be responsible for the technical expertise and leadership of major projects, but also for leading a team of engineers.

You will utilize your Mechanical Manufacturing background in the following areas:

  • Process Development:
  • Planning and leading experiments to produce timely and accurate analyses used to drive design, development, testing, and qualify manufacturing processes.
  • Assessing the suitability of a fabrication technology for a given part design. Planning validation exercises to demonstrate initial feasibility as well as manufacturing capability. Analyzing results of validation exercises and provide technical recommendations.
  • Reviewing progress of development activities at supplier locations and serve as point of escalation for critical process related issues.
  • New Product Introduction:
  • Acts as lead engineer to drive process development and capability assessment activities, reviewing part design documentation to ensure alignment with process capability.
  • Assigns specific tasks and work with suppliers to support process development and/or data gathering activities. Set clear goals for results and provide timely reviews of performance throughout program.
  • Establish validation procedures to determine acceptance of tooling into development builds as well as mass production.
  • Supplier Execution:
  • Review supplier fixture design, process flow, equipment selection, DFM, and DOE proposals. Identify shortfalls and corrective actions to ensure design compliance.
  • Work with supplier engineering teams to map out process development exercises, secure resources, and commit to schedules in line with program goals
  • Assess supplier readiness to support build events and production ramp. Identify potential execution issues and provide recommendations to mitigate risk.
  • 8+ years of engineering experience in mechanical manufacturing
  • 3+ years of management
  • Experience with Mechanical Fabricated parts, jigs, fixtures, tooling, machine shop, (CNC, Mills, Lathes)
  • BS, MS or PhD in mechanical, manufacturing or industrial engineering preferred
  • Demonstrate hands-on mechanical ability
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal interpersonal skills
  • Solid understanding of DOE, GD&T, SPC
  • Strong experience in PFMEA and failure analysis
  • Engineering management or program management experience
  • Strong cross functional partnership experience with multi-disciplinary teams

Base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $196,200 and $295,000, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
