Job Summary
The Modeling Supervisor is responsible for the artistic and technical quality of all 3D models created for the production. This role involves establishing workflows, managing the modeling team, and training artists. Collaboration with other Supervisors and Directors is key to ensure efficient asset transfer across departments while meeting creative and scheduling requirements. Responsibilities include creating high-quality models and UVs, mentoring and training the team, leading the team to meet production needs on time, overseeing daily activities, and recommending pipeline improvements. The supervisor must maintain positive relationships with stakeholder departments, work within the defined pipeline, and ensure continuity with other asset departments.
Must Have
- 5+ years VFX experience modeling photorealistic assets
- 2+ years in a leadership role
- Expert in Maya
- Excellent knowledge of Zbrush and/or Mudbox
- Excellent technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Strong understanding of rigging and displacement map workflow
- Excellent time management and prioritization skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Good to Have
- Mari knowledge
- Experience with creatures, Digi doubles, topology, and blend shapes
- Ability to QA own work
- Team player able to work independently
Job Description
Key Responsibilities
- Creates high-quality models and UVs for use in production; implement improvements/changes based on review feedback and Supervisor/Lead direction
- Designs and implements high level conceptual to practical modeling
- Mentors, trains, and manages the modeling team both in technical and creative capacities
- Leads the team to deliver the production needs on time and to the expected quality standards
- Oversees the daily activities leading the department, and establishing best practice workflows and guidelines for the team
- Proactively recommends ongoing pipeline improvements; Identifies potential issues and provides solutions, and escalates as needed
- Maintains a positive relationship with all stakeholder departments; attend meetings as needed
- Works within the defined pipeline
- Ensures continuity and support other asset departments such as texture, lookdev, Generalists, and rigging
- Works closely with management to guide artists overall professional development by providing performance feedback, mentoring, resolving performance issues and maintaining positive morale within the team
- Completes assigned tasks in a timely manner
Qualifications
- Minimum five (5) years of VFX experience modeling photorealistic assets for live-action feature films
- Minimum two (2) years in a leadership role
- Expert in Maya; could teach a class on how to use it and troubleshoot
- Excellent knowledge of Zbrush and/or Mudbox. Mari knowledge (a plus)
- Excellent technical troubleshooting skills and problem-solving abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to take a design from ambiguous to full design implementation
- Strong understanding of rigging process and displacement map workflow
- Experience working on creatures, Digi doubles, topology, and blend shapes (preferred)
- Eye for detail and able to QA own work to ensure the highest quality before handing off assets
- Excellent time management and prioritization skills; experience working under tight deadlines
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Team player who is able to work independently with minimal supervision
