Job Description

The National Security Engineering Division (NSED) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory offers undergraduate internships for students in engineering, physics, and computer science. Interns will gain practical research experience, supporting projects in electrical, mechanical, computational, nuclear, and chemical engineering. This role involves performing technical assignments, participating in research under supervision, gathering data, utilizing standard software, attending seminars, and presenting work results to a research group.
Must have:
  • Perform technical and/or research assignments in electrical, mechanical, computational, nuclear, and chemical engineering, or related fields.
  • Work directly with engineers, scientists, and technical mentors.
  • Participate in research in assigned area, under close supervision.
  • Gather and analyze data or information in support of scientific research.
  • Utilize standard software packages common in your discipline to complete common tasks.
  • Attend relevant seminars and facility tours.
  • Conduct research and present and communicate concepts and ideas including research project(s).
  • Document and present work results through technical presentations and/or poster sessions.
  • Present and communicate results to research group.
  • Eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
  • College or university student in good academic standing enrolled in an accredited institution pursuing an associates or bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics, computer science or a related field.
  • A sustained record of outstanding academic performance.
  • Ability to work full time for ten to twelve weeks during your internship.
  • Ability to apply basic engineering or scientific principles to solve technical problems.
  • Communication skills necessary to communicate research project(s), document work and give a technical talk/presentation.
  • Ability to present and communicate concepts and ideas.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Experience working with computers and familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Good to have:
  • GPA of 3.5 or above.
  • Technical project experience.
  • Familiarity with tools associated to your field of study.

Job Description

The National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate has multiple openings for continuing undergraduate students in the engineering, physics, and computer science fields. Successful candidates will gain practical research experience to further educational goals, while providing technical and/or research support to projects in the areas of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computational engineering, nuclear and chemical engineering, or other related fields. NSED provides engineering solutions to the challenges facing our nation in national defense, homeland security, energy and environment, and fundamental physics.

In this role you will

  • Perform technical and/or research assignments in the areas of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computational engineering, nuclear and chemical engineering, or other related fields, working directly with engineers, scientists and technical mentors.
  • Participate in research in assigned area, under close supervision.
  • Gather and analyze data or information in support of scientific research.
  • Utilize standard software packages common in your discipline to complete common tasks.
  • Attend relevant seminars and facility tours.
  • Ability to conduct research and present and communicate concepts and ideas including research project(s), document and present work results through technical presentations and/or poster sessions.
  • Present and communicate results to research group.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). See Additional Information section below for details.
  • Must be a college or university student in good academic standing enrolled in an accredited institution pursuing an associates or bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics, computer science or a related field.

Additional Information

Security Clearance

None required. However, if your assignment is longer than 179 days cumulatively within a calendar year, you must go through the Personal Identity Verification process. This process includes completing an online background investigation form and receiving approval of the background check. (This process does not apply to foreign nationals.)

National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)

The 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), Section 3112, generally prohibits citizens of China, Russia, Iran and North Korea without dual US citizenship or legal permanent residence from accessing specific non-public areas of national security or nuclear weapons facilities. The restrictions of NDAA Section 3112 apply to this position. To be qualified for this position, Candidates must be eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112.

Pre-Employment Drug Test

External applicant(s) selected for this position must pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Wireless and Medical Devices

Per the Department of Energy (DOE), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory must meet certain restrictions with the use and/or possession of mobile devices in Limited Areas. Depending on your job duties, you may be required to work in a Limited Area where you are not permitted to have a personal and/or laboratory mobile device in your possession. This includes, but not limited to cell phones, tablets, fitness devices, wireless headphones, and other Bluetooth/wireless enabled devices. If you use a medical device, which pairs with a mobile device, you must still follow the rules concerning the mobile device in individual sections within Limited Areas. Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities require separate approval. Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.
