Job Description

LightForce Orthodontics is seeking a Principal Product Development Engineer for their Hardware Engineering team. This role involves leading the design and development of custom braces systems, including novel product offerings and performance improvements. Responsibilities span product design, process development, test method development, and V&V for scale-up. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams (hardware, software, process, product, clinical, operations) to create solutions and drive strategic decision-making for product commercialization and business growth.
Must have:
  • Design, develop, and implement new products and improvements to existing products.
  • Develop comprehensive testing and measurement methods.
  • Generate design output requirements.
  • Define roadmap to implement methods to characterize product performance.
  • Leverage a deep understanding of LightForce’s fundamental business and operation.
  • Provide technical leadership to mentor younger engineers.
  • Masters in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering with 10+ years of experience, OR PhD with 6+ years of experience.
  • Deep expertise with end-to-end product development.
  • Extensive mechanical design expertise including appropriate utilization of CAD, hand calcs, simulations, and testing.
  • Hands-on build and prototyping experience, e.g. 3D printing and machining.
  • Knowledge of additive manufacturing processes and material properties and behavior as it related to DFM and product performance.
  • Familiarity with basic programming, e.g. Python, JavaScript, SQL.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze complex data and develop effective solutions.
  • Ability to execute independently in ambiguous environments while tackling multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Team player who collaborates effectively and makes others better.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.

Description

We are looking for a Principal Product Development Engineer to join our Hardware Engineering team. This is a growing team that owns the design and development of our custom braces system. As a principal member of the team, you will lead the development and implementation of novel product offerings and drive improvements in the performance of existing products. This work will span product design, process development, test method development and V&V to enable scale-up and implementation of new concepts and designs. You will work alongside colleagues from hardware, software, process, product, clinical, and operations to develop solutions that satisfy a broad and complex range of requirements. Your leadership will help drive decision making and strategy for product commercialization efforts and the broader business.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement new products and improvements to existing products.
  • Develop comprehensive testing and measurement methods to enable rapid design iteration and validation of product performance prior to launch.
  • Generate design output requirements to support development, V&V activities, and buildout of manufacturing specifications.
  • Define roadmap to implement methods to characterize product performance at point of use / during application. Use these methods and data to drive technical roadmap and further design improvements.
  • Leverage a deep understanding of LightForce’s fundamental business and operation to conceptualize new products and strategies to support the next phase of growth.
  • Provide technical leadership to mentor younger engineers and contribute to a strong culture of engineering excellence and ownership.

Education and Experience

  • Masters in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering with 10+ years of experience in product development or design, OR PhD with 6+ years of experience.

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the individual is regularly required to sit or stand, use hands, reach with hands and arms, see, listen, and speak
  • Requires the ability to view and reliably identify small (< 1 mm), low-contrast features on parts/components
  • Requires work activities with production chemicals, adhesives and epoxies, using required personal protective equipment

Work Environment

  • Office environment up to 90%
  • Work is generally performed in an open office, sedentary position. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Limited temperature fluctuations, heated and air condition environment
