Job Summary

Job Description

The Australian Financial Review is seeking a talented and detail-oriented Producer. Producers are integral to the newsroom, responsible for sub-editing copy and headlines, choosing the best images, graphics and illustrations, and publishing stories. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, breaking news environment and possesses a keen news sense, sharp copy-editing skills, an eye for detail and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Producers work across morning, afternoon and weekend shifts.
Must have:
  • Edit stories in the content management system, focusing on production quality and deadlines
  • Identify and correct errors or mistakes in stories and select appropriate captions and images
  • Craft engaging combinations of headlines, write-offs/precedes, and visuals
  • Liaise with reporters and topic editors to edit stories and re-work copy
  • Enhance stories with other assets such as photographs, videos, graphics, multimedia, and key points
  • Cooperate with senior production staff, monitor internal Slack channels and planning boards to ensure stories meet deadlines
  • Curate, edit, and schedule newsletters, monitor live blogs for quality, and craft/send push notifications and social media posts
  • Update the homepage under direction of the News Director, if required
  • Previous experience in sub-editing and production for online publishing
  • Strong understanding of news and current affairs
  • Experience working in content management systems
  • Familiarity with analytics tools and SEO
  • Excellent knowledge of English language, grammar, and syntax, with a keen eye for detail
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately to deadlines in a fast-paced, agile environment
  • Understanding of legal best practice, including defamation laws
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to accept and deliver feedback professionally
Good to have:
  • Knowledge of business journalism, markets, and/or politics
  • Experience posting to social media for an online publisher
  • Experience writing/editing a live blog

Day to day you will:

  • Edit stories in the content management system, focusing on production quality and deadlines.
  • Identify and correct errors or mistakes in stories and select appropriate captions and images.
  • Craft engaging combinations of headlines, write-offs/precedes, and visuals to create compelling "sells" for stories.
  • Liaise with reporters and topic editors to edit stories and re-work copy to the highest standards.
  • Enhance stories with other assets such as photographs, videos, graphics, multimedia, and key points.
  • Cooperate with senior production staff, monitor internal Slack channels and planning boards to ensure stories meet deadlines.
  • Curate, edit, and schedule newsletters , monitor live blogs for quality, and craft/send push notifications and social media posts as required.
  • Update the homepage under direction of the News Director, if required.

Qualifications

What you’ll bring:

  • Previous experience in sub-editing and production for online publishing.
  • A strong understanding of news and current affairs.
  • Experience working in content management systems and familiarity with analytics tools and SEO.
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language, grammar, and syntax, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately to deadlines in a fast-paced, agile environment.

  • Knowledge of business journalism, markets, and/or politics, and experience posting to social media for an online publisher or writing/editing a live blog is desirable.
