The role involves conducting cutting-edge research, contributing to critical products in core AI domains in LLMs, foundation models, deep learning, reinforcement learning, computer vision, NLP, speech understanding, and multimodal research.
As a Senior Researcher, you will be responsible for developing and rapidly iterating on innovative research ideas, collaborating with other researchers, engineers, or research residents to prototype and implement them. You will also provide guidance and mentorship to junior researchers, particularly research residents. Stay up to date with the latest developments in the field, you will contribute to top-tier AI conferences through publications. Your work will have real-world impact, with opportunities to collaborate across teams or business units globally to deploy your ideas on millions of devices, such as mobile phones, AR/VR headsets, and autonomous vehicles.
We are seeking a Research Scientist (Senior Engineer) to join our team focused on pushing the boundaries of foundation speech and language models for resource-constrained environments. This role is ideal for candidates with a proven track record in building scalable, efficient, and cutting-edge speech and language processing systems, and a passion for making advanced AI accessible on edge devices.
Key responsibilities
- Conducting world-class research: explore new theories and models, develop algorithms, and conduct experiments to solve complex AI problems. This research often leads to publications in leading AI conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, CVPR, ACL, and others.
- Collaborating across teams: lead and work closely with other researchers, engineers, and product teams to apply your findings to real-world problems, ensuring that the research contributes directly to the development of AI products and solutions.
- Mentoring and Leadership: mentor junior researchers, AI Residents, guide research projects, and help in shaping the research agenda among teams.
- Publishing and Disseminating Research: Be responsible for disseminating research findings through publications, presentations at conferences, and collaborations.
NLP and Speech Understanding
- Lead world-class research and develop state-of-the-art large speech and languages models. Familiarity with technologies to automatically construct large-scale personalized knowledge bases from unstructured data from edge devices is a plus.
- Have a proven track record of publications in top-tiered NLP/ML conferences such as NAACL, EMNLP, ACL, ICCASP, InterSpeech), NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR.
- Lead and collaborate with other researchers and engineers, internally and externally to develop and transfer NLP/Speech know-hows to integrate and/or build efficient and scalable solutions, driving new Qualcomm product features.
- Preference will be given to prior experiences in building pre-trained models, optimizing models under low-resource conditions, quantized foundation models, research in multilingual speech recognition and synthesis, reasoning/test-time compute and experiences in NLP/Speech for agentic AI.
Requirements
- Minimum requirement: Ph.D. degree in Computer Science specialized in AI (e.g., deep learning, computer vision, computational linguistics, or a related field) with a proven track record of top-class research demonstrated via publications in top-tiered conferences and achievements in building successful project demos, prototypes or products.
- Experience: A proven research track record of publications in top-tier conferences. Senior-level applicants should demonstrate leadership and a track record of managing a small to medium team.
- Skills: Clear and effective communication. Ability to work effectively across disciplinary boundaries and collaborate with product development teams. Flexibility to apply research findings to real-world applications. Proven ability to define research problems and design, implement, and evaluate solutions. Proficient in Python with hands-on experience using deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field and 2+ years of Hardware Engineering, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related work experience.
