Job Description

As a rigging artist at Ubisoft Montreal, you will be responsible for bringing characters and objects to life by creating realistic and intuitive animation systems. You will define how elements can pivot, bend, crush, or stretch, drawing inspiration from reality and imagination. Utilizing internal tools, you will ensure the quality and consistency of your work, collaborating with art, modeling, and animation teams to balance artistic vision with technical constraints and refine models based on feedback.
Must have:
  • Collaborate with the art team to understand game vision and animation needs.
  • Familiarize with concept art and research references.
  • Rig and skin characters and objects, maintaining scene cleanliness and naming conventions.
  • Balance artistic aspects and technical constraints with technical directors.
  • Collaborate with character modelers for model corrections.
  • Work with animators for realistic model movement and manage limitations.
  • Refine work based on feedback from interdependent teams.
  • Minimum 4-5 years of experience in rigging, modeling, or animation.
  • Very good knowledge of 3DS Max.
  • Good knowledge of anatomy and tissues.
  • Excellent observation, organization, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Collaborative, creative, and innovative spirit.
  • Flexibility and resourcefulness.
  • Motivation to seek and adapt to colleagues' opinions.
Good to have:
  • Knowledge of other 3D software (Maya and MotionBuilder)
  • Familiarity with scripting
  • Familiarity with game engines (Unity or Unreal)

JOB DESCRIPTION

As a rigging artist at Ubi MTL, you will enable characters and objects to come to life and move realistically in our worlds.

Pivot, bend, crush, or stretch... you will define what can be done and how, using your flexible and intuitive systems. You will draw inspiration from reality when possible and use imagination when it's not. Thanks to the various internal tools at your disposal, you will be able to focus on the quality and consistency of your results without having to recreate everything from scratch each time.

What you will do

  • Collaborate with the art team to understand the overall vision of the game and the needs for animation and appearances.
  • Familiarize yourself with concept art and research your own references.
  • Rig and skin characters and objects while staying organized (ensuring scene cleanliness, following naming conventions, etc.).
  • Balance artistic aspects and technical constraints with the help of technical directors.
  • Collaborate with character modelers to correct models as needed.
  • Work with animators to make models move realistically and manage movement limitations.
  • Refine your work based on feedback from interdependent teams.

QUALIFICATIONS

What you bring to the team

  • A minimum of 4-5 years of experience in rigging, modeling, or animation (or other relevant experience).
  • Very good knowledge of 3DS Max.
  • Knowledge of other 3D software, a big plus (Maya and MotionBuilder) + familiarity with scripting.
  • Good knowledge of anatomy and tissues.
  • Excellent observation, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • A collaborative, creative, and innovative spirit.
  • Flexibility and resourcefulness.
  • Motivation to seek colleagues' opinions and the ability to adapt to them.
  • Familiarity with game engines (Unity or Unreal), an asset.
