Job Description

Applied Materials is seeking a Safety Engineer III to support Business Units and customers in Taiwan, focusing on materials engineering solutions for chip and display production. This role involves applying technical expertise in chemical, mechanical, and electrical engineering, leveraging safety knowledge, and ensuring conformity with product safety requirements. The engineer will manage 3rd party tool assessments, investigate tool-related events, and contribute to product safety policies and industry standards.
Must have:
  • Serve as Product Safety Engineer supporting key Business Units and customers in Taiwan.
  • Develop a deep understanding of global operations and requirements for programmatic roll-out.
  • Apply technical expertise in chemical, mechanical, and electrical engineering disciplines.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for Product Safety processes, regulations, and industry standards (SEMI S2, S10, NFPA79, EU Machinery Directive, EMC Directive, Low Voltage Directive).
  • Apply analysis techniques like FMECA, PHA, HAZOP, fishbone, and root cause investigation.
  • Evaluate new technologies and products for conformity with safety requirements.
  • Manage 3rd party Product Safety tool assessments and facilitate corrective actions.
  • Conduct initial evaluation of tool-related events, determine risk ranking, and assign investigation owner.
  • Support Business Units and external customers on complex code compliance questions.
  • Assist in development and implementation of Product Safety policies, programs, procedures, and training.
  • Engage as an Applied representative on EH&S and Product Safety industry boards.
  • Regarded as the technical expert in Product Safety and detailed knowledge of NFPA 79, SEMI S2, S8, S14, CE Mark, KC Mark.
  • B.S. in Engineering (mechanical, electrical, chemical).
  • Level-B (or above) Occupational safety and health management personnel Certification.
  • 5-years’ experience in the semiconductor industry providing product safety support, engineering, EHS or an associated role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Working under the direction of the Manager of Product Safety, serve as Product Safety Engineer supporting key Business Units and customers in Taiwan. Assist with other businesses or Enterprise-wide initiatives as requested by the Senior Director, Product Safety.
  • Develop a deep understanding of global operations and requirements to effectively assist Business Unit functional owners with programmatic roll-out, integration and implementation.
  • Apply technical expertise in one or more engineering disciplines, including chemical, mechanical and electrical. Leverage safety knowledge and experiences within the engineering disciplines.
  • Serve in a consultative capacity with Business Unit stakeholders as the subject matter expert for Product Safety processes, regulations, industry standards and Applied specifications as they pertain to products we develop. Requisite expertise includes, but is not limited to, SEMI S2, SEMI S10, NFPA79, the EU Machinery Directive, EMC Directive, and the Low Voltage Directive.
  • Apply an array of analysis techniques to evaluate hazards on Applied tools including failure modes and effects cause analysis (FMECA), process hazard analysis (PHA), hazard and operability studies (HAZOP), fishbone and other root cause investigation methods.
  • Evaluate the introduction of new technologies and products to ensure conformity with applicable regulatory, industry and Applied product safety requirements. Assist in managing complex and/or large scale projects to completion by leveraging technical expertise and experience.
  • Provide product safety-related input on concept and feasibility studies. Perform product/system safety analysis on components, subsystems, and systems. Prepare periodic and special reports in connection with engineering studies and projects as needed.
  • Manage 3rd party Product Safety tool assessments, and facilitate the completion of applicable reports such as S2, EMC and Machinery Directive. Assist in ensuring the business drives tool assessment corrective actions to completion.
  • Conduct the initial evaluation of tool-related events, determine the initial risk ranking and assign an incident investigation owner/group to facilitate cause determination and applicable mitigation. Analyze pertinent product safety event data to detect trends and issues that may have global impact or require Enterprise mitigation.
  • Support Applied Business Units and external customers on complex code compliance questions, legal inquiries, and corporate responsibility objectives.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Product Safety policies, programs, procedures and training.
  • Engage as an Applied representative on EH&S and Product Safety industry and association boards. Provide input to influence development of proposed industry standards in various. Interface and benchmark with company and governmental agencies to benchmark and provide input on trends.
