Cyber security is a significant component of our strategy to protect Telstra, our systems, and our customers from cyber threats. We are on the lookout for several experienced data scientists or engineers to help enhance our use of data science to strengthen our cyber capabilities.
As a key member of a cross-functional cyber security team, you will play a vital role in enhancing Telstra’s ability to identify security threats, anomalies, and compliance risks using data science, machine learning, and AI techniques to rapidly deliver secure, scalable, and adaptive cyber solutions.
This role is central to our vision of embedding AI-driven insights to improve security posture and compliance across the enterprise.
Key Responsibilities
This is how you’ll bring the purpose of your role to life.
Design and implement MLAI models to detect cyber threats, outliers, and policy violations in real-time.
Build and maintain AI pipelines and agents to support anomaly detection, compliance scoring, and validation
Collaborate closely with cybersecurity engineers, threat analysts, and architects to codify detection logic and enable explainable AI
Integrate AI driven security insights into monitoring tools like PatchGuard and other internal dashboards
Use Azure-native tools (Databricks, Event Hubs, Azure ML) to process and analyse high-volume security telemetry.
Actively support secure development lifecycle, including guardrails for autonomous systems and prompt/context security.

About you
To be successful in the role, you'll bring skills and experience in:
Essential Skills:
10+ years in data science, cybersecurity analytics, or AI/ML engineering.
Strong skills in opensource MLAI tools and libraries Python, PySpark, scikit-learn, pandas, NumPy, SciPy, Lanchain, Langfuse, LangGraph, MLFlow, MCP, Semantic Kernel.
Experience with streaming analytics and tools like Azure Event Hubs, Kafka, or Structured Streaming.
Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Engineering/ Computer Science / Information Technology / Telecommunications
Coding/scripting knowledge and capabilities in mainstream languages and code development standards (eg Python)
Developed design documentation including UML/ER diagrams, process flow diagrams for automations, scripts, designed with concepts such as batch, micro-batch, streaming, parallel processing, and asynchronous calls
Experience with Telstra’s New Ways of Working methodology, practices, and mindset:
Agile, DevOps, Lean, Human Centred Design
Jira, Confluence, Gitlab, AzDevOps
Excellent collaboration and communication skills to engage across cyber, data, and product teams.
Desirable Skills:
Experience working with Databricks
Experience developing big data analytics designs and automations leveraging open-source components.
Cyber Security Domain Knowledge preferred.
Designed analytics integrating machine learning models to solve non-traditional problems
Detailed substantial user interfaces with wireframes, RBAC and validation schemes, as well as the integration to back end triggers and processes.
Understanding of AI vulnerabilities, including model inversion, data leakage, prompt injection, or model bias.
Familiarity with SIEM platforms, compliance frameworks (ISO 42001, NIST AI RMF), and model risk management.
Prior experience in telecommunications, critical infrastructure sectors
