About the Role:
Senior Artists play a very important role in the art team. They often take on the most complex of art creation tasks on projects, and their role extends to beyond creation of art. They help with the study and interpretation of client specifications and requirements, create queries for the client, do first level artistic check of the work done by artists, troubleshooting etc.
The Senior Artist position is a key stepping stone to higher roles such as Art Lead and Specialist. The role therefore has not only art creation responsibilities, but it also has elements of responsibilities from higher roles – such as those related to work estimation or first level review of the work of peers and juniors.
Requirements
- Experience
Minimum: 4+ years creating 3D game art for AAA titles or 1 year as senior artist.
- Core Skills
1. High-quality 3D environment creation.
2. Convert high-res sculpts to optimized game-ready assets.
3. Strong baking (Normal, AO, Curvature) & PBR texture creation.
4. Ability to work in multiple styles: realistic, semi-realistic, stylized.
5. Expertise in sculpting: rocks, terrain, statues, foliage, ornaments, etc.
6. Proficiency in: ZBrush, Maya/Max, Blender, Substance Painter, Substance Designer, Photoshop.
7. Understanding game pipelines, real-time shaders, Unreal Engine and Unity.
8. Knowledge of architectural planning, modularity, trim sheets, tileable textures.
9. Experience in large-scale world-building (Optional).
10. Strong communication & detail orientation.
11. Self-driven team player.
- Software skills
1. Sculpting- ZBrush- High-resolution sculpting of organic assets such as rocks, terrain, statues, ornaments, and detailed environment elements.
2. 3D Modeling- Maya, 3ds Max, Blender-Creating base meshes, low-poly models, retopology, UV unwrapping, and preparing assetsfor baking and texturing. Ability to maintain clean topology and optimized geometry for game engines.
3. Texturing-Substance Painter, Substance Designer, Photoshop- Creating PBR textures, baking maps (Normal, AO, Curvature, etc.), building procedural materials, and ensuring assets meet style and technical specifications.
4. Game Engines- Unreal Engine, Unity- Setting up assets, importing textures, testing shaders, validating scales, checking lighting response, and ensuring final assets meet engine performance requirements based on client requirements.
5. Marmoset Toolbag - Baking, previewing materials, and presenting assets clearly during internal and client reviews.
- Job Responsibilities
A. Pre-Production & Planning Interpret client briefs and specifications.
- Assist in effort estimation for incoming work.
- Collect references, prepare checklists, and create client queries.
- Build sample/benchmark assets to define workflow and quality.
B. Asset Production
- Create high-quality, error-free 3D assets per client requirements.
- Ensure correct naming conventions, file structure, and delivery formats.
- Maintain style, quality, and technical consistency across assets.
C. Team Contribution & Leadership
- Guide team artists, perform first-level reviews when needed.
- Support technical and artistic troubleshooting.
- Participate in meetings, share ideas, and flag risks early.
- Report progress for self and dependent artists to Art Lead and PM.
- Ensure tasks are completed within time and effort budgets.
D. Communication
- Clearly understand and interpret client briefs, specifications, and feedback.
- Prepare and send well-structured queries to clients to remove ambiguity and ensure smooth production.
- Participate in client review calls when required and represent the art team professionally.
- Present sample assets, benchmark pieces, or workflow approaches to the client for approval.
- Communicate project risks, blockers, or dependencies early to avoid delays.
- Maintain respectful, timely, and accurate communication in all client interactions.
- Share client feedback with the internal team clearly and ensure it is understood and implemented.
- Document important client instructions, style notes, and updates for team-wide visibility.
