What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • Design, develop and deploy internal solutions and hands-on software development – working closely with leads, designers, and product managers to deliver features and services to our internal customers
  • Primarily working on the backend with Java, but may need to work with other languages and environments
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing and optimally advocate for engineering needs to technical and non-technical team members within the group
  • Model initiatives and ownership in achieving goals, improving processes and solutions
  • Find opportunities for cross-team collaboration to work on new insights and improvements that help achieve our goals

You're probably a match if you have

  • Commercial experience in a software development environment.
  • Working collaboratively with team members and communicating effectively.
  • Extensive experience with Java and Relational Databases
  • Experience in distributed systems design
  • Ability to write performant, reusable code, including appropriate testing
  • Good writing and verbal communication skills

Nice to have

  • Experience working with AWS
  • Understanding the concept of A/B testing and experimentation
  • Experience in full-stack development
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers

About the team

The Experimentation Platform team is responsible for managing the internal experimentation tools, services, and processes utilized by hundreds of Canvanauts. Our goal is to "Accelerate growth & delight by helping Canva learn from every single user." This is accomplished through a custom in-house platform that caters to Canva's requirements and methodologies, empowering all engineers and product managers to make informed and thoroughly tested decisions for the benefit of Canva users, primarily through A/B testing techniques.

About the role

We're seeking backend engineers who are eager to dive into the complex realm of A/B testing, measurements, and data analysis. As part of this team, you'll collaborate closely with seasoned Data Scientists and Engineers across the company on projects that impact Canva as a whole. Experimentation lies at the heart of our growth, and by working on our internal experimentation service, you'll directly influence nearly every service within the company. Even though this work is not exposed to external customers directly, it is crucial to Canva's collective success, driving our vision and strategy forward.
