Job Description

Rocksteady Studios is seeking an experienced and passionate Senior Designer to craft unforgettable encounters for an upcoming AAA title. The role involves designing, prototyping, and iterating on challenging and impactful boss fights, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and maintaining high-quality design documentation. The Senior Designer will also script and tune boss behaviors, balance difficulty, and contribute to the overall game design vision, while mentoring other designers.
Good To Have:
  • Experience with UE4/UE5 Blueprints or similar scripting tools.
  • Experience with animation systems, behaviour trees, or AI design.
  • A portfolio or reel showcasing boss design work or combat encounter breakdowns.
Must Have:
  • Design and implement compelling boss encounters from concept to final polish.
  • Define creative and mechanical vision for boss fights.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to bring boss encounters to life.
  • Own and maintain high-quality design documentation.
  • Develop scalable systems for boss behaviour, attack patterns, and progression.
  • Script and tune boss behaviours, attacks, and phases.
  • Balance difficulty, pacing, and player feedback for fair and rewarding fights.
  • Drive iteration through playtesting, feedback, and data analysis.
  • Contribute to the overall design vision and shape player experience.
  • Help mentor designers, providing feedback and guidance.
  • Extensive experience designing combat systems and boss encounters in shipped titles.
  • Deep understanding of combat systems, boss encounters, enemy AI, and combat pacing.
  • Ability to write clear, structured, and comprehensive design documentation.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, iterative development environment.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Technical knowledge to debug and troubleshoot Design issues.
  • Passion for games and memorable, challenging, and engaging combat encounters.

We are looking for a passionate and imaginative Senior Designer to join our team and help craft unforgettable encounters in our upcoming title. You’ll be responsible for designing, prototyping, and iterating on boss fights that challenge players, push their skills, and leave a lasting impression.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement compelling boss encounters from concept to final polish.
  • Define the creative and mechanical vision for boss fights, ensuring alignment with the game’s tone, pacing, and progression.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to bring boss encounters to life and ensure they meet design goals.
  • Own and maintain high-quality design documentation and ensure alignment across disciplines.
  • Develop scalable systems for boss behaviour, attack patterns, and progression.
  • Script and tune boss behaviours, attacks, and phases.
  • Balance difficulty, pacing, and player feedback to ensure boss fights are fair, readable, and rewarding.
  • Drive iteration through playtesting, feedback, and data analysis.
  • Contribute to the overall design vision and help shape the player experience across the game.
  • Along with the Lead Designer, you will help mentor designers, providing feedback and guidance to support their growth.
  • You should be a positive, proactive, and contributing team member, both within the team and across the studio.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience designing combat systems and boss encounters in shipped titles.
  • Deep understanding of combat systems, boss encounters, enemy AI, player readability and combat pacing.
  • Ability to write clear, structured, and comprehensive design documentation.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, iterative development environment.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Technical knowledge to debug and troubleshoot Design issues as they arise.
  • Passion for games and a strong sense of what makes memorable, challenging and engaging boss and combat encounters.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with UE4/UE5 Blueprints or similar scripting tools.

Hybrid Working - This role is advertised as a Hybrid work model, that combines remote and in-office work, following our current company policy and to be agreed with your Line Manager. Subject to any applicable laws, WBD / your Line Manager reserves the right to change this working agreement where this is essential to business needs and upon reasonable notice to you.
