Job Description

The Senior Environment Surfacing Artist will create outstanding assets, both creatively and technically, ensuring timely delivery. The role involves adapting to diverse artistic styles and demonstrating strong technical knowledge. Responsibilities include creating CG environment surfacing, attending dailies and production reviews, addressing feedback, quality checking work, learning DNEG's workflows, and participating in meetings. Candidates should have experience in feature animation, a strong sense of color and texture, and proficiency in relevant software. The role requires collaboration with leads and supervisors and effective communication within the team. The artist must be able to translate ideas and have highly developed skills with grooming tools.
Must have:
  • Create unique CG environment surfacing and grooming.
  • Submit work to dailies and address feedback.
  • Quality check work before handing off.
  • Familiarity with DNEG Surfacing Dept workflows.
  • Experience in feature animated films.
  • Experience in environment surfacing (props, architecture, etc.).
  • Strong sense of colors and textures balance.
  • Ability to work with Surfacing Leads and Supervisors.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the team.
  • Highly developed skills with grooming tools.
  • Proficient in Mari, Substance, Photoshop, or BodyPaint 3D.
  • Experience in ray-tracing or path-tracing software.
  • Demo reel demonstrating painting, illustration, or design skills.
Good to have:
  • Degree in Computer Animation or relevant course.
  • Solaris and Houdini knowledge

CURRENT POSITION STARTS: late November
DNEG’s Feature Animation division aims to compete at the highest standards in the industry. Environment Surfacers will be required to deliver outstanding assets, both creatively and technically and ensure the delivery of assets within the time frame established.  
 
Since each project is different and requires a unique artistic vision, the candidate will have to demonstrate high skills to adapt to any style or design and have a solid foundation on the technical aspects of environment surfacing creation. 
 
Key Responsibilities 
  • Create unique CG environment surfacing and grooming using provided reference material. 
  • Submit your work to dailies and attend production reviews. Receive and address artistic and technical feedback. 
  • Quality check your work before handing off to downstream depts using DNEG protocols. 
  • Learn and become familiar with DNEG Surfacing Dept workflows and pipeline tools. 
  • Attend various project-specific reviews/discussions, department assembly, and other mandatory meetings. 
 
Job Requirements 
  • Experience working on feature animated films of varying artistic styles.  
  • Production experience as an Environment Surfacer including some or all of: props, architecture, terrain and vegetation. 
  • A strong sense of colours and textures balance with the ability to adapt to any look or style. 
  • Ability to work closely with Surfacing Leads and Supervisors to ensure the quality and technical viability of environment assets for a production. 
  • Ability to effectively translate your ideas, suggestions, and questions with other members of the team. 
  • Highly developed skills with grooming tools and understanding of general use in environments. 
  • Proficient in Mari (preferred), Substance, Photoshop, or BodyPaint 3D. 
  • Production experience in modern ray-tracing or path-tracing software like RenderMan or Arnold. 
  • Demo reel with descriptive breakdown illustrating knowledge and experience in painting, illustration, or design. 

 

Additional Skills / Nice to Have 
  • Degree in Computer Animation or relevant course. 
  • Solaris and Houdini knowledge
