About The Role
The IQ Design team is dedicated to creating simple, delightful, and transformative user experiences. We're seeking a Senior Software Design Engineer who bridges the gap between design vision and technical reality, bringing ideas to life through functional prototypes and polished production code. You'll work across teams and disciplines, collaborating with designers and engineers throughout HP IQ to explore new possibilities and ship experiences that feel like natural extensions of the human experience.
As a Senior Software Design Engineer, you'll alternate between rapid experimentation and careful implementation. One day you might be prototyping a new interaction pattern for a hardware device; the next, you might be refining the animations that make our software feel alive. Success in this role requires both technical excellence and design sensibility. You should be equally comfortable debating typography choices and optimizing render performance.
We're looking for someone who gets excited about the craft of building software, who sees code as a design material, and who believes the best way to evaluate an idea is to build it. You'll have the freedom to explore your own concepts while also serving as a technical partner to designers bringing their visions to life.
What You Might Do
- Build functional prototypes that explore new interaction paradigms across hardware and software
- Translate design concepts into high-fidelity, interactive experiences using modern technologies
- Contribute production-ready code that emphasizes craft, performance, and delight
- Partner with designers to rapidly iterate on concepts, building multiple variations to find what feels "just right"
- Experiment with AI technologies and find innovative ways to integrate them into user experiences
- Collaborate across teams to ensure design intent carries through to shipped products
- Explore emerging technologies and find unexpected applications for real-world problems
- Mentor other engineers on design thinking and help designers level up their technical skills
- Shape technical standards and best practices for interface development
Essential Qualifications
- 6+ years building digital products, with a portfolio demonstrating both technical excellence and design craft
- Fluency in contemporary development frameworks and languages, with the ability to choose the right tool for each prototype or product need
- Comfortable working in Figma and other design tools to understand intent and collaborate on solutions
- Has shipped production applications or experiences at scale and refined them based on real user behavior and feedback
- Experience with creative coding and building interactive prototypes that push beyond conventional interfaces
- Proven track record of technical leadership and collaborating effectively with designers and cross-functional teams
- Curiosity and resourcefulness when learning new technologies
- Deep appreciation for the nuances that make interfaces feel good to use
Preferred Skills
- Experience with native development (SwiftUI, React Native, Compose) or game engines for prototyping
- Familiarity with AI technologies (LLMs, embeddings, vector databases) and their practical applications
- Background in creative tools like Processing, p5.js, Three.js, or experience with motion graphics, animation systems, and breathing life into interfaces
- Experience building design tools, component libraries, or developer-facing systems
- Understanding of motion design and animation principles
- Interest in bridging digital and physical experiences
- Side projects that show experimental thinking or unique approaches to problems
- Experience working in design-led organizations or as part of integrated design & engineering teams
We request that you submit a portfolio showcasing 2-3 projects that demonstrate your ability to bridge design and engineering. This could include functional prototypes, production features you've shipped, or personal experiments. We're particularly interested in seeing your process—how you think through problems, iterate on solutions, and make decisions about implementation details that impact the user experience.

As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:
A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

Why are you being asked to complete this form?
We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.
Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
