Job Summary

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Originations team at Oportun, you will design, develop, and optimize scalable systems for customer acquisition, both organically and through partner integrations. You will build resilient, high-performing solutions for onboarding funnels, acquisition platforms, and integration layers, enabling millions of customers to access Oportun’s products securely. This role involves leading end-to-end technical initiatives, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and driving growth.

Must Have

  • Deliver scalable acquisition systems for customer onboarding and partner acquisition pipelines.
  • Develop robust, secure, and efficient APIs and integration frameworks for partner-driven acquisition.
  • Collaborate with product, marketing, and growth teams to translate goals into technical solutions.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership and make key architectural decisions.
  • Conduct code reviews, enforce coding standards, and guide on testing, monitoring, and CI/CD.
  • Mentor junior engineers and foster a culture of innovation and technical rigor.
  • Drive innovation to optimize acquisition funnels and improve customer experience.
  • Own production issues related to customer onboarding or integrations, ensuring timely resolution.
  • Lead complex multi-month initiatives to expand acquisition reach and partner ecosystem.
  • 6+ years of software engineering experience with a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent).
  • Strong proficiency in Java, Kotlin, or similar programming languages.
  • Proven success in developing RESTful APIs and integrating with external systems.
  • Experience with relational databases and SQL.
  • Experience deploying and maintaining services on AWS or Azure, including Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Strong understanding of build automation, testing frameworks (e.g., Karate, WebDriver I/O), and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with cross-functional teams in fast-paced environments.
  • Proven ability to mentor and influence teams, with strong communication skills.
  • Passion for tackling complex acquisition and integration challenges.

Good to Have

  • Working knowledge of frontend technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React).
  • Familiarity with event-driven architectures and messaging systems.

JOB OVERVIEW

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Originations team, you will play a critical role in driving our customer acquisition journey - both organically and through seamless partner integrations. You will design, develop, and optimize scalable systems that power our onboarding funnels, acquisition platforms, and integration layers that connect Oportun with key external partners.

You will leverage your technical depth and architectural experience to build resilient, high-performing solutions that enable millions of customers to access Oportun’s products quickly and securely. This role provides the opportunity to lead end-to-end technical initiatives - from requirements gathering and design to successful delivery - while collaborating with product, design, data, and business teams to accelerate growth.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Deliver scalable acquisition systems: Own the design, development, and maintenance of software solutions that power customer onboarding, eligibility checks, and partner acquisition pipelines.
  • Integrate with external partners: Develop robust, secure, and efficient APIs and integration frameworks that enable partner-driven acquisition flows.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally: Work closely with product managers, marketing, and growth teams to understand acquisition goals and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Lead with technical excellence: Provide hands-on technical leadership and make key architectural decisions that ensure systems are reliable, scalable, and maintainable.
  • Champion best practices: Conduct code reviews, enforce coding standards, and guide the team on testing, monitoring, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Mentor and elevate the team: Coach junior engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and technical rigor.
  • Drive innovation: Identify opportunities to optimize acquisition funnels, improve customer experience, and accelerate partner integration timelines.
  • Ensure reliability: Own production issues related to customer onboarding or integrations, ensuring timely resolution and continuous improvement in system resilience.
  • Contribute to strategic projects: Lead complex multi-month initiatives that expand acquisition reach and partner ecosystem.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience: Typically requires 6+ years of software engineering experience with a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience).
  • Technical expertise: Strong proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Java, Kotlin, or similar.
  • API and integration experience: Proven success in developing RESTful APIs and integrating with external systems or partner platforms.
  • Frontend exposure: Working knowledge of frontend technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React) is a plus.
  • Data fluency: Experience with relational databases and SQL; familiarity with event-driven architectures and messaging systems is desirable.
  • Cloud proficiency: Experience deploying and maintaining services on AWS or Azure, including containerization using Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Automation & CI/CD: Strong understanding of build automation, testing frameworks (e.g., Karate, WebDriver I/O), and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to work with cross-functional teams in fast-paced environments, balancing innovation with execution.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to mentor and influence teams, with strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Problem-solving mindset: A passion for tackling complex acquisition and integration challenges, ensuring high system performance and customer impact.
