As a Senior/Staff Digital Electrical Engineer, you will be part of a cross-functional team developing Intravascular Ultrasound Systems. Your responsibilities include designing and developing FPGAs and digital PCBAs for medical ultrasound applications, collaborating with various teams to refine design requirements, specifying and qualifying components, performing tests, and maintaining documentation. You will also lead verification and validation plans and participate in transferring designs to manufacturing. This role requires experience in digital electronics and FPGAs, proficiency with FPGA design tools, and knowledge of relevant medical device standards. This is an office-based role in San Diego, CA. This role requires being in the company’s facilities.

Senior/Staff Digital Electrical Engineer – FPGA for Medical Devices (San Diego, CA)

As a member of an international cross-functional team, you work closely together with electrical engineers, transducer engineers, system engineers, and ultrasound engineers on the development of Intravascular Ultrasound Systems.

Your role:

  • Conceptualizing, designing, and developing FPGAs and digital PCBAs for medical ultrasound applications, with a focus on sustaining existing designs to ensure continuous improvement and reliability in diagnostic disposable devices and capital equipment.

  • Collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams, including marketing, hardware, software, catheter design, and manufacturing, to refine design requirements for next-generation intravascular ultrasound devices.

  • Responsibilities include specifying and qualifying components, equipment, and design tools based on analyses of design specifications, costs, availability, and reliability, and integrating these into both new and existing designs to optimize performance and efficacy.

  • Performing tests and debugging designs while maintaining comprehensive documentation aligned with the quality system to support the seamless transition from design to production, adhering to established development procedures.

  • Leading the creation and execution of formal verification and validation plans in collaboration with Quality and Regulatory teams, actively participating in transferring designs from R&D to manufacturing and conducting technical design reviews with project teams and independent experts.

You're the right fit if:

  • You've acquired 5+ years of experience in the design and development of digital electronics and FPGAs, preferably within medical electronics. Strong background is HDL is required.

  • Your skills include proficiency with FPGA design tools, schematic capture software, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, emulators, and other lab equipment for testing and debugging electronic designs. Experience with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), electrostatic discharge (ESD), and signal integrity testing to international standards is required, and familiarity with embedded software development is a bonus.

  • You have a BS/MS in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field. Experience applying IEC 60601-1 and related medical device electronics standards is desirable.

  • You must be able to successfully perform the following minimum Physical, Cognitive and Environmental job requirements with or without accommodation for this position

  • You're an effective communicator, both orally and in writing, able to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with company management and outside business associates. Additionally, strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment and highly matrixed organization are required.

How we work together:

We believe that we are better together than apart. For our office-based teams, this means working in-person at least 3 days per week. Onsite roles require full-time presence in the company’s facilities. Field roles are most effectively done outside of the company’s main facilities, generally at the customers’ or suppliers’ locations.

This is an office-based role in our San Diego, CA office.

Philips Transparency Details:

The pay range for this position in CA is $110,000 to $177,000

The actual base pay offered may vary within the posted ranges depending on multiple factors including job-related knowledge/skills, experience, business needs, geographical location, and internal equity.   

In addition, other compensation, such as an annual incentive bonus, sales commission or long-term incentives may be offered.  Employees are eligible to participate in our comprehensive Philips Total Rewards benefits program, which includes a generous PTO, 401k (up to 7% match), HSA (with company contribution), stock purchase plan, education reimbursement and much more.  Details about our benefits can be found here

At Philips, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top end of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each case.

  • Company relocation benefits will not be provided for this position.  For this position, you must reside in or within commuting distance to San Diego, CA.
