Summary

Guru Studio is seeking a Shot Finaling Artist to work on the animated feature film, Julián. Responsibilities include reviewing and finalizing 2D shots, ensuring they meet the production's visual style and quality standards; making adjustments to colors, lighting, and other visual elements; integrating and polishing final effects, transitions, and compositing elements; conducting quality control checks; collaborating with compositors and other teams; ensuring smooth transitions and a cohesive look; applying minor fixes; rendering completed shots; organizing and archiving finalized shots; and maintaining communication with supervisors. The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of experience in a similar role, strong skills in compositing and finishing software (Nuke, ToonBoom Harmony, Photoshop), an understanding of compositing principles, color correction, and visual effects, and excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
Must have:
  • 2+ years experience in 2D animation shot finalizing
  • Proficiency in Nuke, ToonBoom Harmony, Photoshop
  • Strong compositing, color correction, and VFX skills
  • Quality control and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Good to have:
  • Knowledge of 2D animation pipelines
  • Familiarity with ShotGrid

We're crewing up on Julián, a new animated feature film from five time Oscar nominated studio Cartoon Saloon (WolfWalkers, The Breadwinner, Song of the Sea, The Secret of Kells and Late Afternoon). The 2D film marks the feature directorial debut of Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Louise Bagnall (Late Afternoon), with the title based on the graphic novel "Julián is a Mermaid" by Jessica Love.


Julián is the second collaboration between Guru Studio, Cartoon Saloon and Aircraft Pictures, following the 2018 Oscar-nominated film, The Breadwinner.


We’re looking for a visionary and talented Shot Finaling Artist to help us bring this inspired story to life!


Responsibilities:

  • Review and finalize completed 2D shots, ensuring they meet the production’s visual style and quality standards.
  • Make adjustments to colors, lighting, and other visual elements to ensure consistency across scenes.
  • Integrate and polish final effects, transitions, and compositing elements.
  • Conduct quality control checks, identifying any artifacts, alignment issues, or inconsistencies that may disrupt the flow of scenes.
  • Collaborate with compositors, digital ink and paint team to refine shots as needed, following feedback from supervisors and directors.
  • Ensure smooth transitions and a cohesive look within each scene and across sequences.
  • Apply minor fixes to address shot-specific technical issues, such as layering errors or visual glitches.
  • Render completed shots and prepare them for final review and delivery, adhering to technical specifications.
  • Organize and archive finalized shots, ensuring they are accessible for future reference or reuse.
  • Maintain communication with supervisors to report progress, flag any potential issues, and discuss creative adjustments.


Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years in a similar role, preferably within a 2D animation production environment
  • Strong skills in compositing and finishing software, Nuke, ToonBoom Harmony, Photoshop.
  • Understanding of compositing principles, color correction, and visual effects in a 2D animation context.
  • Ability to spot and correct visual issues, ensuring a high standard of quality and consistency.
  • Creative and technical problem-solving abilities to handle issues that arise during shot finalizing.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work closely with other departments, including compositing, animation, and art teams.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Strong eye for color, lighting, and composition, with an understanding of how these elements contribute to storytelling.
  • Knowledge of 2D animation production pipelines is a plus.
  • Familiarity with ShotGrid for managing tasks and deadlines.
