Job Description

SimpliSafe is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to join the Data Platform Team. The role involves designing, implementing, testing, deploying, monitoring, and supporting new and existing modules of the Data Platform. The engineer will collaborate with external companies, internal engineering teams, analysts, and data scientists to manage data and analytics. This fast-paced, intellectually stimulating environment offers an opportunity to contribute to a new data platform. The responsibilities include working with orchestration tools, cloud environments, infrastructure as code, Python, network protocols, optimizing SQL, and designing scalable and secure services. The engineer will interact with product owners and users, and must be a team player who can learn quickly and apply agile software development principles.
Must have:
  • Strong computer science foundations, including data structures and algorithms.
  • Experience with orchestration tools (e.g., Dagster, Prefect, Airflow).
  • Experience with AWS or another cloud environment.
  • Experience with AWS CDK or other Infrastructure as Code technologies.
  • Experience with Python or readiness to learn and use it.
  • Experience with common network protocols (e.g., HTTPS, SFTP).
  • Experience with optimizing SQL for various databases.
  • Experience in the entire development process.
  • Experience in designing scalable, resilient, and secure services.
  • Experience interacting with product owners and users.
  • A true team player who is always ready to help the team.
  • Ability to learn much and fast.
Good to have:
  • Experience with managing and using Tableau and other data visualization products.
  • Experience with building and productionalizing ML models

What You’ll Do

SimpliSafe is looking for a top-notch Staff Data Engineer to join our Data Platform Team. The Data Platform team is designing and building SimpliSafe's Data Platform that is used for analyzing ever growing amount of data with the goal of making every home secure.

In this role, you will design, implement, test, deploy, monitor and support new and existing modules of the Data Platform. You will work directly with external companies, internal engineering teams, analysts and data scientists that provide or consume data and analytics. If you enjoy working in a fast paced, intellectually stimulating environment and want the opportunity to build something brand new, we want to talk!

(All candidates should be at a commutable distance from our Boston office.)

About You

  • Strong computer science foundations, including data structures and algorithms, OO design patterns, concurrency, statistics and their implementation in your main/preferred programming language.
  • Experience with orchestration tools like Dagster, Prefect, Airflow, Step Functions
  • Experience with AWS or another cloud environment.
  • Experience with AWS CDK or other Infrastructure as Code technologies.
  • Experience with Python or readiness to learn and use it as your main language.
  • Experience with common network protocols such as HTTPS, SFTP.
  • Experience with optimizing SQL for Athena, Snowflake, BigQuery, Trino, PrestoDB or any relational database.
  • Experience in taking a feature through all stages of the development process from idea to deployment, monitoring and support.
  • Experience in designing scalable, resilient and secure services.
  • Experience in interacting with product owners and users of the products that you or your team delivered.
  • A true team player who is always ready to help the team and the users.
  • Ability to learn much and fast.
  • Practitioner of lean or agile software development principles and practices, understanding and advocating the importance of test automation, continuous delivery, continuous improvement, and value delivery.

Ideally you have

  • Experience with managing and using Tableau and other data visualization and reporting products
  • Experience with building and productionalizing ML models
