Job Description

The Staff Engineer, Product Lifecycle role involves providing technical support to manufacturing to meet quality and yield goals for existing products. The role includes leading New Product Introductions and product transfers, working closely with other organizational functions. Responsibilities include supporting the design and development of high-performance fluorescence microscopy and DNA sequencing systems, participating in project teams, managing project plans, and coordinating the release of new products. This position also involves troubleshooting, failure analysis, and leading product enhancement efforts, as well as managing Engineering Change Order implementations and documentation. The role requires mentoring junior engineers and fostering technical growth within the team, ensuring quality products transition smoothly from development to manufacturing.
Must have:
  • Good knowledge of optics, mechanical, and electromechanical systems.

  • Good grasp of BOM structuring fundamentals and creating ECOs.

Good to have:
  • 10+ years of experience in optical system design and assembly.
  • Solid knowledge of GD&T, tooling, stress analysis, and manufacturing processes.
  • Proficiency in engineering tools such as statistical analysis and DOE.
  • Proficiency in optical design software like Zemax or Code V.
  • Experience with problem-solving techniques such as 8D and FMEA.
  • Experience with software packages like Excel, LabView, or MS Project.
  • Demonstrated use of MRP systems and Change Control processes.
  • Experience with FDA-regulated medical device product development.
  • Product development experience in life sciences or biotech industries.

Provide technical support to manufacturing to satisfy the quality and yield requirements for the existing products in a rapid growth environment. Lead in New Product Introduction as well as product transfer activities such as development, testing and getting ready for mass production of new instrumentation and tooling, working closely with other functions of the organization.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead the support for the design and development of robust high-performance fluorescence microscopy and DNA sequencing systems.
  • Lead the support for instrument manufacturing and customer solutions with technical expertise related to electromechanical, optical and fluidics systems.
  • Participate in Project Core Teams to lead and drive the release of quality products into manufacturing and incorporate new designs into life sciences instruments.
  • Manage project includes creation and maintenance of detailed project plans and schedules for team members, provide status reports and make presentations to stakeholders.
  • Interface with design engineering in coordinating the release of new products.
  • Participate and lead in troubleshooting, problem solving, failure analysis, root cause, and corrective action processes as required.
  • Carry out design experiments, perform analytical measurements and interpret results of system and sub-system level testing to qualify or resolve product and process issues.
  • Lead the definition, design, development, testing, and validation efforts for product enhancements.
  • Apply various analysis techniques, such as FMEA and statistical analysis to optimize product quality and minimize cost, providing all calculations, performance data, and drawings required on new and existing products.
  • Manage and coordinate Engineering Change Order implementation activities including scrap analysis, material disposition, update work instructions and test requirement changes.
  • Carry out documentation responsibilities include, but not limited to, generating detailed engineering drawings, Bill of Materials, test reports, assembly procedures and design validation plans.
  • Work closely with contract manufacturing partners to ensure smooth transition of quality products from development into manufacturing.
  • Other such duties that may be determined by Management.
  • Mentor junior engineers & fostering technical growth within the team.

Position Requirements:

  • Good working knowledge and experience in optics, mechanical and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Candidate must be able to effectively lead teams, interface well with the manufacturing and service organization, and has a proven track record of transferring products to manufacturing.
  • Ability to translate, statically analyze data, and effectively report problems through written and/or graphical formats.
  • Advanced understanding and use of engineering tools such as statistical engineering techniques, design of experiments, product and process capability analysis.
  • Good grasp of BOM (Bill-Of-Material) structuring fundamentals and could create ECOs (Engineering Change Order) and Deviations.
  • Effective interpersonal and written communication skills and multi-tasking capabilities.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and accuracy, and the ability to work independently in a team environment are essential.
  • Must be comfortable with a rapidly changing work environment.

Preferred Experience/Education/Skills:
  • 10+ years of experience in optical system design and assembly for commercial and industrial markets.
  • Solid knowledge of optics, GD&T, plastic & sheet metal tooling, stress analysis, mechanics, machining and standard manufacturing processes are essential.
  • Proficiency in engineering tools such as statistical analysis, design of experiments, product and process capability analysis.
  • Proficiency in optical design software such as Zemax, Code V, and SolidWorks.
  • Working knowledge and application of problem-solving techniques such as 8D, KT, FMEA, cause and effect and brainstorming
  • Advanced experience using one or more of the following software packages: Excel, MS Access, LabView, MS Project, Visual Basic, Team Center and Java programming, Python, MATLAB knowledge will be added advantage.
  • Demonstrated use and understanding of MRP systems, Product Data Management systems and Change Control processes, SAP & PLM experience will be added advantage.
  • Experience with FDA regulated medical device product development preferred.
  • Product development experience in the life sciences, biotech, biomedical, nanotechnology or semiconductor industries preferred.
