Guardian is seeking a confident, independent Underwriter to join a collaborative team, focusing on identifying risk selection for Multi-Life Life and Disability. This role involves problem-solving, data analysis, and effective communication with sales and business teams. Good To Have:
  • Experience in Guarantee Issue Case Level Underwriting for Individual Disability and Executive Benefit Life.
  • Knowledge of Individual Life and Group Life, Group Long Term Disability, Individual Disability, and/or Supplemental Income Protection (Multi-Life Disability & Life) products, risk selection and distribution.
Must Have:
  • Understand current market trends to offer competitive plan designs for employees.
  • Evaluate the risk profile of each case by analyzing key risk levers.
  • Negotiate with sales representatives and communicate program offers.
  • Collaborate with teams in pre-sale and pre-enrollment activities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external contacts.
  • 5+ years of insurance risk management experience.

You are

You are a confident, independent professional with exceptional consulting and negotiation skills. You consistently demonstrate sound judgment and can clearly articulate your decisions on a case-by-case basis, balancing analytical rigor with strategic insight to support business objectives.

You will

  • Understand current market trends to offer competitive plan designs for employees of companies who agree to pay for or market Guardian Supplemental Income Protection and Individual Life Products.
  • Evaluate the risk profile or each case by analyzing key risk levers, including financial, occupational, etc., to ensure sound underwriting decisions aligned with company guidelines and risk tolerance.
  • Negotiate with sales representatives and communicate details of program offers.
  • Collaborate with teams in pre-sale and pre-enrollment activities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with both internal and external contacts.

You have

  • 5 + years of insurance risk management experience
  • Experience in life and disability underwriting, experience in Guarantee Issue Case Level Underwriting for Individual Disability and Executive Benefit Life a plus.
  • Knowledge of Individual Life and Group Life, Group Long Term Disability, Individual Disability, and/or Supplemental Income Protection (Multi-Life Disability & Life) products, risk selection and distribution a plus.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience.
  • An aptitude for problem solving and critical thinking.
  • The ability to engage others to combine expertise and problem solving together.
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced team, pivoting to multiple tasks through the day.
  • The ability to remain adaptable and contribute to a work environment that seeks and recognizes continuous improvement.
  • The ability to interact with confidence while engaging in open discussions to build rapport with others.

Reporting Relationships

  • As our Underwriter, you will report to our Head of Underwriting Multi Life

Location

  • Pittsfield, MA or Bethlehem, PA with work from home flexibility (Hybrid - 3 days in office)

Travel

  • 10% travel required for this role for in-person and/or sales meetings.

Salary Range:

$57,810.00 - $86,715.00

The salary range reflected above is a good faith estimate of base pay for the primary location of the position. The salary for this position ultimately will be determined based on the education, experience, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate. In addition to salary, this role may also be eligible for annual, sales, or other incentive compensation.
