Job Description

Roboto Games is seeking a Unity VFX Artist for a contract role on Stormforge, a stylized open-world survival crafting game. The artist will create real-time VFX for combat, characters, environments, and storms using Unity VFX Graph/Shader Graph. This role involves collaborating with various teams to maintain cohesive style and performance, and rapidly iterating effects from blockout to shippable quality.
Must have:
  • Create stylized real-time VFX for a 3rd-person action game (combat, characters, environment, storms)
  • Build Unity VFX Graph/Shader Graph effects and prefabs ready for in-engine use
  • Collaborate with concept, environment, tech art, design, and engineering to maintain a cohesive style and solid runtime performance
  • Rapidly iterate in-engine, from blockout to shippable quality
  • Strong reel/portfolio of stylized real-time VFX in Unity
  • 2+ years building gameplay VFX (outstanding juniors considered with exceptional reels)
  • Hands-on with VFX Graph & Shader Graph; comfortable building reusable prefabs
  • Familiar with URP performance considerations (draw calls, overdraw, batching/instancing, texture memory)
  • Strong art fundamentals: shape language, color, timing, composition, visual hierarchy for readability
  • Excellent sense of timing/motion and how VFX supports gameplay clarity
Good to have:
  • Light C# scripting for triggers, events, and effect hooks
  • GPU instancing / compute for high-density effects
  • Houdini for flipbooks/meshes and After Effects for motion tests

Responsibilities

  • Create stylized real-time VFX for a 3rd-pern action game (combat, characters, environment, storms)
  • Build Unity VFX Graph/Shader Graph effects and prefabs ready for in-engine use
  • Collaborate with concept, environment, tech art, design, and engineering to maintain a cohesive style and solid runtime performance
  • Rapidly iterate in-engine, from blockout to shippable quality

Requirements

  • Strong reel/portfolio of stylized real-time VFX in Unity
  • 2+ years building gameplay VFX (outstanding juniors considered with exceptional reels)
  • Hands-on with VFX Graph & Shader Graph; comfortable building reusable prefabs
  • Familiar with URP performance considerations (draw calls, overdraw, batching/instancing, texture memory)

Contract Details

  • Start: September 2025 End: April 2026 (could be extended)
  • 30 - 40 hours per week
  • Classification: Independent contractor; monthly invoicing; standard work-for-hire/IP assignment
  • Art tests: If requested, paid and scoped to ≤1 working day
  • Rate: based on experience and location; please include your expected hourly rate
  • Location: Remote (within 4 hours of Pacific Time)

  • Stormforge is an open world survival crafting game where players will craft, build, fight, and harness epic storms to survive in a magical fantasy world
  • Premium game, launching on PC Steam
  • 3rd person action/adventure game built in Unity
  • Real-time multiplayer co-op for 1 to 8 players
