Job Description

The Home team is looking for an Assistant Editor to help manage the team, guide the digital news report and use platforms to build stronger relationships with readers. This role involves setting home screen lineups, overseeing messaging, and directing story framing for various audiences and platforms. The Assistant Editor will also help maintain focus on short- and long-term goals, foster a culture that prizes creativity, collaboration and initiative, and work in a fast-paced environment, collaborating with technology, product, and design teams.
Must have:
  • Provide guidance, direction and feedback to a team of staff editors and senior staff editors
  • Write and approve home screen headlines and summaries, push notifications, and targeted emails
  • Assess the quality and tone of what we publish, flagging potential concerns to appropriate editors
  • Monitor competitors and react to breaking news by coordinating with desk editors and determining programming plans
  • Prepare agendas for daily news meetings, including discussions of priorities with members of the masthead and other senior newsroom leaders
  • Coordinate home page presentations and alert plans for major projects and news events
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of journalistic independence and a commitment to the mission
  • Five or more years of experience as a digital news editor
  • Excellence in news judgment, audience-sensitive framing and writing mechanics
  • Excellence in communication and organizational skills
  • Talent for writing headlines, news alerts, summaries and other display type
  • Grace, efficiency and collegiality under pressure
  • Confidence and wisdom in making decisions
  • Comfort synthesizing competing priorities and the direction of multiple supervisors
  • Digital experience and knowledge of various content management systems

  • B.A. or B.S. degree

About the Role

The Home team is looking for an Assistant Editor to help manage the team, guide the digital news report and use our platforms to build stronger relationships with readers.

As our Assistant Editor, you will set the lineups for our home screens, oversee messaging, and direct and implement the framing and targeting of our stories for a variety of audiences and platforms. You will also help us maintain a sharp focus on short- and long-term goals, and help build a culture that prizes creativity, collaboration and initiative.

We are a team that works at the speed of the news, so we need an editor who believes in our mission, is passionate and knowledgeable about what's happening in the world and is eager to work in a fast-paced environment. As our team's remit expands, including scaling our international home screen to a 24/7 schedule and rethinking the tools we use to plan and program all of our surfaces, the role of our assistant editors is more critical than ever. They are important partners to our colleagues in technology, product and design on evolving forms of journalism and the platforms that deliver it to our audience.

This is a hybrid position based in Los Angeles and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. The schedule will include at least one weekend day.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance, direction and feedback to a team of staff editors and senior staff editors
  • Write and approve home screen headlines and summaries, push notifications, and targeted emails, working with the appropriate editors to make necessary adjustments
  • Assess the quality and tone of what we publish, flagging potential concerns to appropriate editors; filtering and translating input from colleagues across the report
  • Monitor competitors and react to breaking news by coordinating with desk editors and determining programming plans, as merited
  • Prepare agendas for daily news meetings, including discussions of priorities with members of the masthead and other senior newsroom leaders
  • Coordinate home page presentations and alert plans for major projects and news events
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Deputy Editor, Home Team

Basic Qualifications

  • Five or more years of experience as a digital news editor
  • Excellence in news judgment, audience-sensitive framing and writing mechanics, as well as communication and organizational skills
  • Talent for writing headlines, news alerts, summaries and other display type
  • Grace, efficiency and collegiality under pressure; confidence and wisdom in making decisions; comfort synthesizing competing priorities and the direction of multiple supervisors
  • Digital experience and knowledge of various content management systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • B.A. or B.S. degree.
