As a lead member of the Transit Engineering Team, the Engineering Manager ensures the quality, time, and cost of service projects within the region, aligning with business development. This role involves close collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders, active participation in strategic planning, and driving a culture of continuous improvement. The manager will lead and manage the TSG engineering team, representing Wabtec Transit Services technically to customers, and optimizing the engineering budget to meet financial plans and market needs.

Job Details

Scope/Job Objective

  • As a lead member of the Transit Engineering Team, the Engineering Manager is responsible to ensure the Quality, Time and Cost of all service projects within the region and in alignment with the company business development plan.
  • Therefore, s/he will be working closely with cross-functional stakeholders across the organization, including services, operations, as well as engineering teams from other Product Lines.
  • The Engineering Manager will have active participation in the company’s strategic plan and is responsible for ensuring the achievement of the Engineering actions plan across the assigned region.
  • The Engineering Manager will work closely with TSG Engineering Global Leadership to contribute and deliver the global services projects assigned to India Team
  • The Engineering Manager will drive a culture of empowerment, encouraging and engaging employees in the positive process of continuous improvement of services, systems and processes.
  • The effectiveness of this position is measured by the achievement of Transit engineering objectives

Primary Purpose

Wabtec Transit Services technical face in front of customer, representing all rail product lines in the region Lead and manage the TSG engineering team to ensure the project outcomes and achievement of business plan objectives. Lead and collaborate internally with different functions – services, both at local and global level to ensure the common objectives are met. Deliver high level professional, strategic and technical liaison, consultancy and advice, to key internal and external stakeholders. Manage and optimise the engineering budget to meet the financial plan and support product development strategy to meet market needs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Providing technical leadership and oversight to a multidisciplinary team of professionals, to collaboratively develop and deliver solutions ensuring they provide for the best engineering and operation performance of the product or system in a timely and effective manner.
  • Lead and direct the TSG Engineering Team through coordination meetings and monitor progress against schedules to ensure on budget delivery of products in line with the contract description and quality standards, whilst ensuring customer satisfaction.
  • Coordinate the multi-disciplinary engineering teams to ensure that sufficient engineering competence and expertise is applied to all design and design changes.
  • Provide Technical support for customer issues resolution.
  • Review the Technical tender package and validate the tender package
  • Lead, coach, mentor and develop staff skills in required areas to ensure all staff are highly skilled and motivated individuals.
  • Keep Senior Management Team informed of any significant issues or developments that may adversely impact on the technical integrity of the relevant activities.
  • Reinforce a ‘high performance culture’ encouraging innovation and continuous improvement, including the facilitation of continuous improvement initiatives within the Engineering departments.
  • Lead the implementation of strategic improvement processes to maximize the re-use of existing designs in new projects; improve durability and reliability testing; and improve the quality of designs at customer release.
  • Manage compliance with applicable national and international legislation, standards and licensing requirements.
  • Stay abreast of technology and engineering trends and champion engineering best practices.
  • Monitor and review schedules to ensure timely completion and report progress and cost.
  • Coordinate the efforts between engineering functions to optimize all cost and customer requirements
  • Prepare annual budget request for projects, estimating staffing and equipment supply needs based on recent trends and planned activities.
  • Promote Wabtec’s EHS program by setting a high standard for safety and environment and displaying leadership by encouraging the involvement of all staff in achieving a safe and healthy workplace.
  • Active participation in the Transit Services Group staff meetings – Regional and Global

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 10 yrs experience in Rail or adjacent industries, with at least 5 years in leadership roles.
  • Experience working in a mutli-national and matrix organization.
  • Strategic management and negotiation skills;
  • Complex analytical interpretation and problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to provide strong technical leadership, coupled with people and project management skills;
  • Business, communication, change management and customer service skills;
  • Demonstrated initiative and sound organisation/time management skills, with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to identify improvements, determine priorities, multi-task and effectively and efficiently meet deadlines;
  • A strong focus on providing the customer with products of the necessary quality to meet their requirements.
