Entry-level Website / Graphic Designer

Location: Hybrid with home office in Berkeley, Los Angeles, Sacramento, or Santa Ana

PlaceWorks is looking for a web/graphic designer who will be responsible for creating eye-catching, interactive, and beautiful websites for our clients. We are seeking individuals with professional experience designing and building websites. The ideal candidate is creative, energetic, and is committed to helping us communicate with diverse communities on projects that involve improving neighborhoods, cities, and the environment.

In collaboration with project managers, this position will assist our planning, design, and environment teams by using software engineering / programming / design skills to build and improve websites and associated graphic materials. To be successful in this role, the applicant will need to have excellent visual design skills, technical knowledge, and communication abilities. Education or background in Urban Design, Planning or Landscape Architecture is a plus.

The position’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Building, designing, and launching websites for public outreach associated with our project.
• Maintaining websites throughout the duration of projects, such as updating calendar events, posting documents, running surveys, etc.
• Working with project managers and attending meetings with clients to understand scope and needs for each website.
• Tracking website analytics.
• Creating and editing graphics, illustrations, and other design materials that may be independent of website responsibilities.
• Responding to quick turnarounds and deadlines when clients need pages or documents live for public review.
• Working on graphics or other content for project work in Urban Design, Planning or Landscape Architecture.

You're most likely a fit if you possess the following key qualifications and skills:

• Familiarity with WYSIWYG website builders. Primary work will be in Wordpress.
• Experience with raster and vector graphics editing and creation – PlaceWorks uses Creative Suite.
• Experience customizing with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
• Understanding of UI, cross-browser compatibility, and general web functions and standards.
• Design of websites / graphic design to meet WCAG accessibility standards.
• Fluent or familiar with Elementor Pro, Wordpress plugins, and basic SEO.
• Familiarity with integrating surveys, interactive maps, video, donation pages, other third party platforms into websites.
• Graphic design experience with and enthusiasm for creating great looking materials.
• Organizational skills - file naming, dates, iterations of documents.
• Basic video editing (trimming, splicing, sizing) is a plus.
• Experience/interest in interactive platforms such as Social Pinpoint is a plus. On-the-job training is available.
• Knowledge of Storymaps/GIS is a plus. On-the-job training is available.
