Job Description

TransUnion is a major credit reference agency offering specialist services in fraud, identity, and risk management. They are seeking a Lawyer - Data Protection and Commercial to join their Legal team. This role involves providing legal advice on data insight services, creating contract templates, supporting regulatory engagement, and advising on compliant data asset use. The successful candidate will need a detailed understanding of UK data privacy law and the FCA regulatory regime, along with strong interpersonal and organisational skills. The position is hybrid, requiring a minimum of two days a week in the office.
Must have:
  • Provide legal advice on data insight services and data asset use, ensuring compliance with licence terms, legislation, industry codes, and policy.
  • Create contract templates for new services, train the client contracting team, and support live client contract negotiations.
  • Support legal and regulatory horizon-scanning and engage with external stakeholders, including responding to consultations and queries.
  • Support service launch and change management in key markets outside the UK, including instructing and managing local counsel.
  • Advise on compliant data asset use for service development and operational change, especially for innovative proposals.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of contracts, legislation, industry codes, and policies regulating TransUnion's data assets.
  • Support the Data Protection Officer, Government Relations, and TransUnion’s representatives at data oversight committees and regulators.
  • Prepare and provide training on regulatory and legislative developments and the use of TU’s data assets, products, and services.
  • Provide ad-hoc assistance to solutions development and operational teams in compliant data asset and service management.
  • Understand and follow internal processes, proactively driving and responding to process innovation within UK Legal and the wider business.
  • Licensed legal practitioner.
  • Experience in or advising legal functions of information services or regulated financial services.
  • Detailed understanding of UK data privacy law (UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018) and FCA regulatory regime.
  • Aptitude to obtain expert knowledge of TransUnion’s wider regulatory universe.
  • Aptitude to obtain appropriate technical and commercial understanding of TU’s services to assess data risks and opportunities.
  • Aptitude to tenaciously investigate complex and novel challenges and provide commercial solutions.
  • Capability and experience working collaboratively in a fast-paced, highly commercial environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with diverse stakeholders.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Methodical, thorough, diligent, with strong attention to detail and documentation skills.

What You'll Bring:

We’re looking for a Lawyer - Data Protection and Commercial to join our growing Legal team.

Day to Day You’ll Be:

  • Providing legal advice to the UK and European business on the development of new, leading edge data insight services and the use of existing and newly acquired data assets in a manner that complies with licence terms, legislation, industry codes and policy.
  • Creating contract templates for the sale of new services, training the client contracting team on these templates and providing subject matter expert support to live client contract negotiations.
  • Supporting legal and regulatory horizon-scanning and engagement with external stakeholders, including responding to consultations and queries from regulators and trade associations.
  • Supporting service launch and change management in key markets outside of the UK where TransUnion services may be licensed for use, including instructing and managing local counsel.
  • Advise the business on how its data assets can be used compliantly as part of data insight service development and operational change processes, often in response to innovative and mould-breaking proposals (both business to business and business to consumer).
  • Obtain and maintain an in-depth knowledge of the contracts, legislation, industry codes and policy that regulate the use of data assets by TransUnion.
  • Support the work of the Data Protection Officer, Government Relations and TransUnion’s representatives at internal and external data oversight committees /governing bodies and regulators (including FCA and ICO).
  • Prepare and provide training to other team members and the wider business on regulatory and legislative developments and the use of TU’s data assets, products and services.
  • Provide ad-hoc assistance to solutions development and operational teams in the compliant management of TransUnion’s data assets and services.
  • Understand and follow internal processes but also proactively drive and respond to process innovation within UK Legal and the wider business.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Licensed legal practitioner.
  • Experience of working in or advising the legal function of an information services company and/or regulated financial services business.
  • Detailed understanding of UK data privacy law (including UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018) and the FCA regulatory regime.
  • Aptitude and appetite to:
  • obtain expert level knowledge of TransUnion’s wider regulatory universe;
  • obtain an appropriate level of technical and commercial understanding of TU’s services to be able to assess and advise on data related risks and opportunities; and
  • tenaciously investigate complex and novel challenges posed by the business and provide commercial solutions.
  • Capability and experience of working collaboratively in a fast-paced, highly commercial environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with a variety of technical and non-technical stakeholders at all levels, both internal and external to TransUnion
  • Effective in communicating verbally and in writing, with consideration to the intended audience
  • Methodical, thorough and diligent, with strong attention to detail and strong documentation writing and presentation skills
  • Strong planning, organisational, and time management skills to manage and lead multiple priorities, manage multiple stakeholder expectations and work to deadlines with multiple deliverables
