Job Description

The Lead Application Engineer will be a highly skilled and customer-focused individual with a deep technical background in Aerospace & Defence (A&D). The role involves driving technical engagements throughout the sales lifecycle, creating complex engineering solutions using Ansys Digital Mission Engineering technology for A&D customers. This includes understanding customer needs, translating them into value, working with the sales team, identifying growth opportunities, and providing technical solutions. The candidate will be expected to lead customer engagements, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to marketing efforts. The position requires strong communication and problem-solving skills. The summary needs to be at least 75 words to describe the job.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree in related engineering field.
  • Experience with Ansys DME software (STK, ODTK).
  • Proficiency in Object Oriented Programming (OOP).
  • Demonstrated understanding of aerospace engineering practices.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time.
Good to have:
  • In-depth knowledge in Astrodynamics.
  • Strong understanding of Flight Dynamics.
  • Familiarity with Radar Systems principles.
  • Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
  • Prior experience in modeling and simulation of complex aerospace systems.

We are seeking a highly skilled and customer-focused Lead Application Engineer with a deep technical background in Aerospace & Defence (A&D) to join our pre-sales engineering team. In this pivotal role, you will leverage your expertise to drive technical engagements throughout the sales lifecycle, create complex engineering solutions through Ansys Digital Mission Engineering technology to support the regional A&D customers.

This position requires a blend of advanced technical proficiency and exceptional communication skills, with a strong emphasis on understanding customer needs and translating them into tangible value. This role encompasses working closely with the sales team to identify business growth opportunities, drive technical engagements, involve appropriate subject matter experts, and provide technical solutions for our customers.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Work independently within multi-disciplinary teams to significantly grow our business for a full portfolio of simulation products, particularly within the Aerospace and Defence sector.
  • Demonstrate profound technical mastery and knowledge of engineering simulation techniques, specifically within aerospace domains, to provide the highest level of technical support to customers, ensuring high-quality and timely service.
  • Regularly interact with aerospace customers to understand their solution needs, key business initiatives, and engineering design workflows, addressing their requirements for solutions during design and engineering stages.
  • Lead complex customer engagements throughout the sales opportunity lifecycle, interacting with key customers to understand their technology needs, key business initiatives, engineering design workflows, and articulate our value proposition to Director or C-level audiences.
  • Gather and document relevant metrics to demonstrate the impact of technical engagements and proposed solutions.
  • Gather customer requirements to support the continuous improvement of our software and collaborate with product development teams to translate customer requirements into new product capabilities, guiding the product roadmap.
  • Participate in internal corporate initiatives to share knowledge and to create best practices, both within and outside the Aerospace discipline.
  • Mentor junior application engineers, fostering their technical growth and customer-facing skills.
  • Support field and digital marketing efforts, including authoring conference presentations, technical papers, and webinars relevant to aerospace applications.
  • Actively collaborate with other team members as well as other functions including sales, marketing, and product management/development within and outside of the region to drive customer success.

Minimum qualifications and experience

  • Required education and degree Type: Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Aerospace/ Astronautical/ Mechanical/ Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Required years of professional experience: BS+10, MS+6, or PhD+3
  • Demonstrated use of Ansys DME software (STK, ODTK) and knowledge of multiphysics tools (e.g. structural, fluid dynamics, electromagnetics, thermal etc.).
  • Competency in Object Oriented Programming (OOP) and familiarity with the following programming languages: Python, MATLAB, C#, Java.
  • Demonstrated understanding of aerospace engineering practices, product development lifecycles, experience with building solutions using simulation technology, and deploying those solutions within customers’ engineering workflows.
  • Track record of delivering exceptional customer outcomes and contributing to revenue impact with A&D industry.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills.
  • Logical problem-solving, strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to facilitate and conduct webinars and presentations to customers and a wide range of audiences. Fluent in writing and speaking English.
  • Ability to organize and drive multiple complex projects across geographically diverse locations. Possesses a strong sense of urgency.
  • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time.

Preferred skills and knowledge areas

  • In-depth knowledge and experience in Astrodynamics (orbital mechanics, trajectory optimization, mission planning).
  • Strong understanding of Flight Dynamics (aircraft stability and control, aerodynamic performance).
  • Familiarity with Radar Systems principles, simulation, and analysis.
  • Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodologies and tools.
  • Proficiency in Multiphysics simulations relevant to aerospace applications (e.g., aero-thermo-structural coupling, fluid-structure interaction, electromagnetics).
  • Prior experience in modelling and simulation of complex aerospace systems.
  • Knowledge of various aerospace subsystems and their interactions.
  • Experience with space launch vehicles, satellites, aircraft, or defence systems.
  • Ability to interact effectively with senior business managers and C-level executives.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand business requirements and translate these into an execution plan that delivers value and meets business goals.
