Since 2018, Rio ESG has been helping various industries including investment managers, corporates, financial services, and public sector organizations track sustainability data, report on ESG, manage policies, and learn how to become more sustainable.

Most of their clients are medium and large organizations in the UK, including NHS Scotland, Ministry of Justice, JD Sports & big international investment banks like Sanne Group.

About the Product

Rio is an intelligent sustainability management system consisting of three main parts: ESG Data Tracking & Reporting, Governance & Education. It also includes Rio AI - a proprietary AI engine that utilizes patented methodology to map expert knowledge, employing a transparent model to analyze sustainability data and deliver tailored recommendations to users through a user-friendly chatbot interface.

About the Role

Rio is looking for a hands-on Lead Developer to guide their fast-moving tech team and shape the future of their sustainability platform. You’ll own critical technical decisions, lead feature delivery across a modern stack, and help them scale as they build out the next generation of reporting, automation, and intelligence tools.

Responsibilities:

• Lead engineering across our full-stack TypeScript platform (React, Node.js, GraphQL, MySQL, Redshift)
• Mentor engineers and drive clean, scalable architecture
• Collaborate with product, design, and data teams to deliver high-impact features and dashboards
• Oversee ETL processes and integration with BI tools (like QuickSight)
• Help expand our AI capabilities for smarter data handling, insight surfacing, and automation

Essential knowledge, skills & experience:

• Strong experience with TypeScript, React, Node.js
• Solid backend and database knowledge (MySQL, Redshift)
• Comfort navigating cloud infrastructure (AWS)
• Familiarity with GraphQL, ETL pipelines, and BI/reporting tools
• Leadership experience or readiness to step into a team lead role

Nice-to-have

Bonus if you’ve worked on platforms handling large-scale data or integrating AI/ML to improve user and operational outcomes. You are AI-driven coding first and are experimenting with tools such as Claude code, Cursor, etc, to improve output and automate parts of your development process.
